The hosts then revisit the long-running 'Free Lunch' bit, detailing how Sky never paid for meals during their time in San Jose and playing a mocking song about it. Later, Mikey and his mother, Esther, conduct a disastrous cooking demonstration for a Food Network audition, where Mikey struggles and burns himself, leading to a brutal critique from the staff who praise Esther but lambaste Mikey. The 'Reality Bites' segment features outrageous reality show ideas from Mikey, Eddie, and Sean, with Eddie's 'Trading Blouses' winning the listener vote. Give him an easy one. I said it. Are you ready, Joe? All right. Stoner word number two. Your word is crescendo. A gradual increase in volume of a musical passage. Crescendo. Can you use it in a phrase? Sure. He's screwed. I will. A little while ago, Sky and I reached our musical Crescendo. That's a fact.
Yeah, I think Freelance is right. I'm pretty screwed. Crescendo is C-R-E-N-S-H-A-D-O. Oh, who cussed? Who cussed? Turn down the thing. Got to hit the button there. Redo. Yeah. Come on. So what does that mean? Does that mean we've got to go back over to... I don't know, first guy won it. Are you kidding me? Holy cow. Congratulations, Burnout. You are the top putthead of the day. Hey, there you go, P1 Mike.
Right on. Yeah, good work, all right. Hang on the line. You want yourself a Rio MP3 player. Go ahead and give us a hit to take us home. Right on. There you have it. That's P1 Mike. P1 Mike, please hang a line. That is tobacco, by the way. Of course it is. It is? Well, of course. I mean, we're not promoting any kind of drug use on this program. That dumb, smart guy.
Yeah, what was up with that? What was up with that? We ruined everybody's fun. Well, it's okay. We still have other stuff to do. He did call Sky free lunch, so that was awesome. Well, no, it wasn't, Eddie. It really was. Well, no, I don't think it was. You are free lunch. Well, no, I'm not. Yes, you are. Skye, you know why we call you free lunch. It died. We've moved past free lunch. Thank you very much. I don't think we have. Let me just tell everybody the story. Sean, why don't you have a seat? We tell the story about free lunch. Oh, damn it. Sean remembers this. When we were in San Jose. Can you give me a break with this? Aren't we doing other things?
When we all worked together in San Jose, we would all go to lunch together as a show each and every day. Sometimes we would go to really, really cheap restaurants. Sometimes we would go to the middle-of-the-road restaurants. And every once in a great while, we'd go to a pricier restaurant. But it didn't matter which one of those restaurants we went to. There was one of us that always got a free lunch. And happy to accept. Excuse me.
The check would come out, and three people's hands would reach for the check. I'm a slow eater. Yeah. Remember, she would take out that purse that had nothing in it. It would just kind of be like a fake little... The decoration purse. Yeah, the decoration purse, like there was a wallet inside or something. Give me a break. First of all, I'm a slow eater, so I'm still finishing my meal. Apparently a slow grabber for the check as well. And also, I would like to mention... A slow credit card getter? There were times where I did pay, so thank you very much. Thank you very much, I did. But under what circumstances? Now, out of 365 lunches, Sky maybe paid for two when it was at a restaurant called Viet Ho,
where the average eight-course meal cost approximately $1.65. There wasn't a single entree that was over $4. It was great because when we were in San Jose, people didn't even know her as Skye. Such crap. They knew her as Free Lunch. Hilarious. They would call and they'd go, hey, Free Lunch. That's true. To the point where we had to make a song about it. Okay. What? Oh, dusting off an oldie but a goodie. Yeah.
Dusting off an oldie but a goodie, Skye. How dare you? Good looking. Done. She's a good girl. Damn it. Loves her ganja, loves a free lunch, and the big cat too, she's a good girl, gets hungry about noon, will never pay, doesn't matter who's, yeah! Why are we playing this right now? This is old school.
It's awesome. Come on! Remember a free lunch? When the bill comes, she looks the other way, takes her wallet, now the check's up to you, never leaves hungry, she doesn't miss a meal, just as long as someone else gets screwed, and she's free! That's what I'm talking about. Free lunch Why? Come on
Yes, she's free Free lunch Don't point at me, Sean All the co-workers know her skin Doesn't affect her The girl needs to eat Gets a dog's bag From her free meal Won't waste a scrap She might as well steal
Yes, she's free Free lunch, yes she's Free lunch, yes she's Free lunch, yes she's Yes, she's free Free lunch, yes she's Skye, that is an oldie, but a goodie. I love it. That was great. Good memories. That is an oldie, but a goodie. How dare you guys dig that up? Good times. Good yet bad memories. That was stupid. All right. Are we ready? I've paid plenty of time. Okay. I believe we are ready to do our cooking show. Now, yesterday morning on the show, Eddie said, Eddie and Skye, they said, why don't
you guys, you and your mom, come in and demonstrate for us how you guys are going to do you know this video that you're putting together for the food network because the food network is looking for the next food network star and so we're going to put together a tape and uh we're going to have you and what we're going to do today is we're going to do a cooking demonstration right here on the air and we're going to have you guys critique it and tell us how we're doing and you know if we should change anything or whatever and so are you guys ready to do that i'm going over the other side of the board i'm excited i'm a critiquer i want you to meet my mom this is esther
hi gorgeous yeah and and what we're going to do now mom you got to remember you got to talk right into the microphone just like that all right okay now what we're going to be making today now this is we're going to go ahead and start we're going to start okay now realize you we're going to go ahead and get the video camera out so this is going to get on tape yeah and you gotta you gotta you know you're gonna have a certain amount of time right to you know film your segment right okay uh okay um now what we're gonna be making today is uh why don't you introduce yourselves oh yeah yeah yeah let's introduce ourselves uh my name's mikey and uh this is my mom esther
hi and uh esther is uh you know and not only my mom but she's also a great mexican cook and uh Growing up, Mom, you always were making things just like you're going to make tonight. Tonight, you're going to be making chicken quesadilla, right? Yes, that's correct. Now, tell me, when you were growing up, how often would you actually have quesadillas? Was it a treat or something that you had all the time? Something that we had all the time. And your mom made that, right? Yes, but then when we learned, we did it. Okay, now, explain to everybody what you're actually going to be doing here. You're heating up a pan, right?
Yes, the pan has to be real hot. And then you put your tortilla on, and we put cream cheese. But the cream cheese has a mixture, and I can't say it over the radio because it's a secret. It's a secret. Will you tell me off here, Esther? It's a family secret. Okay, now a lot of people maybe have never done this with a quesadilla, but believe me and trust me, I've had these before, and they're delicious. So, Mom, go ahead, and this is just your average cream cheese. You can find it at any market. And, you know, it's up to you whether or not you want to use the low-fat or the regular. This is the regular kind, right, Mom?
That's correct. Okay, now what do I do? Do I just spread this schmear onto the tortilla? No, you're going to put it in a bowl, and then I'm going to put my herbs and things that I put in it, which I can't say. Okay, let's go ahead and put it in the bowl. And then you're going to put it on the tortilla, rub it all over the tortilla. Cream cheese? I'm mixing in your special herb mixture. Now, did you watch your mom do this and you sort of picked up this recipe from your mom? Yes. Okay. All right. Now, we got this mixture all ready to go. Let's go ahead and put that under the tortilla.
Okay. And put it all over the tortilla. Okay. Now, Mom, does this pan have to be really, really exceptionally hot or does it matter? No. It can't be real, real hot because it'll burn the tortilla. Okay. Just hot enough to where when you fold it, it'll bubble. Okay. All right. And so we've got it all spread on there. And now what? Now we take the chicken? Yes. Okay. The chicken, of course, you boil it in herbs that we can't say. Right. Right. Now, if you go to Mikey and Esther's website, you can find...
Some of these special herbs. Some of these special herbs. And so right now we've got the tortilla on the pan. It's heating up. We've got some of the chicken on there. And now what are we going to put on, Mom? We're going to put cheese. And I mix different cheeses, like three different kinds of cheeses. You don't want to tell everybody. No. No, no, no. Well, see, now a lot of people are probably wondering right now, Mom. Well, how do I make this at home if I don't exactly know what to put on it? And my mom said to me before we came on the air, she said, You know, screw them.
And so I said, hey, you know, I said, hey, Mom, okay, you know, okay. Don't hurt me. All right, Mom, so what are we going to do now? We're going to pour the cheese on over the chicken. Spread it evenly over the chicken. All right. All right, there we go. We're spreading the cheese on over the chicken. Uh-huh. Okay. As soon as you see it start melting a little bit, then you fold it. And you can see right away, because the pan is pretty hot. You got the pan pretty hot here. So you can see, like, almost immediately that it starts to melt just a little bit, right? And it's bubbling, uh-huh.
And it is starting to bubble. So what do we want to do at that point, Mom? Then you want to fold it. Okay, so we're going to fold. We're going to use just a regular spatula, but you could use anything like, you know, a set of tongs. Yeah. A fork. But a spatula works better. Okay, so let's use the spatula. We're going to put it over just like that, right? Uh-huh. Okay, pat it down or no patting it down? Well, you do with your hand, not the spatula. Okay, with your hand, not the spatula. Now, what about giving myself third-degree burns, Mom? No, you won't be doing that. Okay, okay. It's not going to be that hot. Okay, because it was.
I was hurt a great deal to stick my hand into a hot pan that way. But, you know, I'm your son, you're my mom, so I'll trust you and hurt myself. Now, we've pretty much got this. Okay, you can turn it now. I can turn it over now. Yes. Because it's starting to bubble on that side. Yeah. Not like my fingers. It's pretty hot. All right. But it looks golden brown and beautiful. It hurt me a lot. I'm used to that. Now, next time, use a spatula then. Gotcha, gotcha.
Now, all right, that's it. We've pretty much finished up. Join us next time. We'll be making another wonderful Mexican dish for you. Mom, tell everybody what Mexican dish we'll be making for them the next time they join us. Well, let's see. I'll have to think about that. Mom's not prepared, but that's okay. Don't worry. Next time, I'm sure she'll have a wonderful treat all ready for you. So join us next time on the Mikey and Mama Show. Bye. Wow. All right, guys.
Now, I need you to be honest here, okay? Now, don't hold back. I know that there was a couple of mistakes there. I know there was a couple of mistakes there, but go ahead and let us know what you think could be done and that kind of deal. All right, well, I'll go ahead and go first. Go ahead, Eddie. Go ahead. First of all, I really don't know what the point of having you on the show is. I loved your mom. You shouldn't say that about my mom. No, your mom was great. You are pretty much worthless. I mean, why are you even there?
You didn't know anything. Excuse me, this is my critique. Excuse me, in all fairness to me, without me in that segment, How would people have recovered from the small mistakes that mom made? Well, your mom made no mistakes. You were the one that's sticking your hand on the hot frying pan. She told me to. Like, your mom, I wanted to hear more of your mom and, like, her cooking style. You dominated it, and you, like, hogged the mic. It was embarrassing, really. That's okay, Mikey. I know. It was embarrassing, really.
Yeah, I mean, I had a lot of problems with the segment itself. That's rude. You were awful. I'm sorry. Okay, okay. Obviously, you're doing a bit. I'm not doing a bit. Sky, Sky, Sky. Well, first of all, I did enjoy it very much. I giggled a few times. Of course, Esther, the star of the show. No question. I mean, you know, I don't want to be as brutal as Eddie was, but, you know, maybe you guys can practice. Maybe you can practice and, Mikey, take a few tips from your mom, like how to, you know, work the microphone. Like, he doesn't even know how to cook.
Why is he on the cooking show? I don't get it. So let me get this straight. So the bit is like, oh, Mike, you're no good. I get it. There's not a bit. This is an honest critique. What are you on the show for? Yeah, I mean. Okay, well. I mean, well, maybe he's there to facilitate his mother's knowledge. He was good. To, like, help get it out there. Skye, why don't you talk about, like, kind of how I led the piece? Well, because you just kept asking questions to your mom about how to cook. I mean, yeah, without that, I guess.
Be honest, Esther. Did you drop him on his head when he was a kid? I mean, I want to, I mean, be honest. But I enjoyed it. Sean, why don't you try the truth? I will give you the truth. Thank you. I have always found that I enjoy cooking shows where the ingredients are withheld from me. So that I absolutely, positively cannot make the food that was presented on the show. But it's a family secret. Okay, all right, it's my turn.
I would also like to say that if I were watching this on television, you would get about five words out and I'd be gone. And for the record, who was it that was withholding the family recipe? My mom, thank you. So now you're throwing your mom under the bus. I'm just saying, I love my mom, but she didn't give the recipe. Are you guys a team? Yes, yes. And what did you do? What did you do? I helped her when she stumbled.
She didn't stumble. She was fine. The only thing you did was helped her under the bus just now. And then you showed viewers how to burn themselves. Yeah, you did good at that. Ashley, Ashley. Yeah. Would you like to comment on what you saw? My only commentary is that if you're going to be doing a cooking show, you probably shouldn't injure yourself during the process. And as for Esther, I thought she did a fabulous job of delegating the very oh-so-confused, what do I do now, what do I do now, Mikey.
Well said, Ashley. But I'm also pretty sure that I would watch the show if it was on, because it was entertaining because Mikey almost burned his hand. Okay, great. Well, if I'm to take this correctly, all of you refuse to be a friend to me. So I will now go to my one true friend, Boston Rob. Well, Mike, I'm glad you came to me because I do have some critiques. Thank you. I got some positives and some negatives.
You know what? Go ahead and give me the negative first. I can take it. Okay, Chef Boy, he can't cook. You looked a little confused, a little like a lost puppy. Ah, got it, yeah. But other than that, there's no serious injuries. There's a positive. True. And I'm assuming it will be edible. Thank God your mother was here. Let's move on to more positives. Mrs. Sparza, as we say in Boston, that was wicked good.
Wicked good. There you go. Nice. Nice. So there you go. I liked everything. Yeah, I was good. No, you weren't. Well. Honestly. I mean. All right, why don't you give me some positive critiques that we can take as a team to send our tape in? Esther, get rid of Mikey. Skye? Yeah, I really don't have much to say that hasn't already been said, so. Ashley? Good luck. Okay.
Sean? Esther, lose the dead weight. Rob? The Mama Show. Yeah, I like it. Nice. Okay, well, completely demoralizing. What? I mean, I could see, like, a Mexican-themed show on the Food Network just without you. Yeah, good idea, Eddie. Well, it's supposed to be a mother and son. But you did nothing. What were you on the show for? to facilitate. Facilitate what? Hugging the mic?
Then you know what? Mission accomplished. Okay, thank you. Good job. There's your positive. Good job hugging the mic. Thank you, Mom. Thank you for having me. Bravo, Esther. You're the best. I want that quesadilla. That looks good. Never had such a thing. All right, folks. That's awesome. Obviously, I would have to have, like, professionals from Food Network in order to get the real deal. Oh. Because, you know, and I should have known. I really should have known.
I mean, I'm dealing with amateurs here with you people. I realize how great my cooking skills are. Maybe the P1s have something to say? Hello? Hello? Yes? Yes. I'm going to bid $25 on a replay on this CD so I can replay this. All right. We will do that. Thank you. Listen, we're going to send the tape in, and I'm sure that you... Don't send that tape in.
Please don't. Do not I'm telling you It's a good tape Needs a little work to be done A little tweak here and there But I think overall we have the concept down Thank you very much mom You were awesome There you go Alright we gotta move on to other stuff TV TV TV TV TV TV TV TV TV Let me tell you about some friends I know. They work together on the Mikey Show.
They spend a lot of time watching TV. But they're not digging what they see. They got ideas for some TV shows. I'll bet you Eddie wants to see porno. Mikey likes anything that's gay. And ask for Sean Ben, I'm afraid Reality Bites Reality Bites Reality Bites All right, folks, if you've never heard Reality Bites, here is the way that it works.
You're going to call us right now, and you're going to pick your horse. You're going to either pick me or Eddie or Sean. 570-1053, and we are going to read reality show ideas to you, okay? Oh, I'm so glad your mom just left. I was pre-reading these, and I'm like, I can't say this stuff with your mother in the room. Oh, no. Oh, man. I'm so glad. Now, we've got reality show ideas written by myself, Eddie, and Sean. Skye is going to read them.
She usually adds her own two cents. No, no, actually. She embellishes. No, I don't. Embellishes, perfect, thank you. I read them exactly how they're sent to me. Fonny nanny. I've been specifically told I'm not allowed to change it with my fonny nanny. You and your fonny nanny. Hey, nanny nanny. Why don't you add me up? Fonny nanny. I mean, are we getting punchy already? Shut up. Okay. Come on. So here's how it works. So Skye will read the ideas.
You're going to pick which one of us you want, and whoever has the best idea will vote on them. Whoever has the best one will win for that person. What's the prize? Yeah, Eddie, what is the prize? Season one of the UFC Ultimate Fighter. Whoa. P1 Jim, who would you like to hit your horse to? Let's go with Eddie. You got it. Hang on the line. P1 Francisco, who would you like? Mikey. There you go. And P1 Erica, you've got Sean, okay? Okay. Please hang on the line. Reality show idea number one. Starsky and Butch.
Uh-oh. Put simply, it's a show about chick cops who are bull dykes. Oh, nice. And the best pair will become Starsky and Butch. Cheer on your favorites during the many challenges like the carpet devouring round. The rowing challenge with only a man in a canoe. This is stupid. And the mathematics lightning round with questions like 67 plus 2 equals. That should separate the men from the women who want to be men.
Watch them arm wrestle a baby holding an apple. Or put one another on the spot, not the F spot, but the, oh wait, what comes after F? Right. Oh, oh yeah, G. Starsky and Butch? Guy, that's so rude. We got it. Yes, Guy. Starsky and Butch, hosted by Donna Frye. Oh, I like it. And that is Starsky and Butch, reality show number one. Donna Frye. Okay. All right, reality show idea number two is trading blouses. This reality show sees the hottest women in town taking their clothes off
and seeing how the other half lives. See the nerdy librarian get wild when she trades blouses with an El Cajon prostitute. Check out the conservative school teacher, pop her top, and trade blouses with Misty over at Cheetah's. Not much of a top there. And camera's role as everybody's favorite prude in beating Skye gets lucky with Donkey Kong when she trades blouses with the hot, busty, airhead Ashley. A show not just about boobs.
Okay, maybe it is, but how awesome is that? That is trading blouses. Oh, wow. Awesome. Horrible. Nice work. I hate this game. All right. Our third and final reality show is called Three Disses. This show is the takeoff of Amy Grant's Three Wishes. That's the show where Amy makes wishes come true in the lives of three people who are down on their luck. This show is designed to put rich people in their place. Welcome to Three Disses.
This show allows people to write in about neighbors, family, and even your own boss if they're a little too big for their own britches. Larry, who heads up the Intel department at IBM, has his home burnt to the ground and receives a video in the mail of his wife and her new boyfriend, Jerome, on a romantic getaway at a Tuscan Motel 6. Craig Myers, CEO of Walmart, is temporarily blinded with pepper spray as he steps off his private jet while two big Aryans recreate the gimp scene from Pulp Fiction. And finally, Jennifer Lopez makes a celebrity cameo when her assistant has them shave her head while she sleeps.
And a real tattoo artist writes, I'm still slutty on the block on her forehead. And gives her permanent crooked whiskers and a swastika cheeks. That is three disses. Three disses. Okay. So run down the ideas one more time. All right. And then we'll open up the phone lines for people to vote. So dumb. Reality show idea number one is Starsky and Butch, where chick cops who are homosexual look to become Starsky and Butch. Okay.
Reality show idea number two is trading blouses where uptight chicks trade blouses with slutty chicks. Got it. And reality show number three is three disses where you take people who are too big for their britches and take them down a peg. Okay. All right, so you're going to call and vote on one of those shows. Starsky and Butch, trading blouses or three disses. Yes. Mikey's show, which one do you want to vote for? Trading blouses. Mikey's show, which one do you want to vote for? Trading blouses. which one would you like to vote for
trading bosses which one would you like to vote for trading bosses which one would you like to vote for starsky and butch which one would you like to vote for trading bosses which one would you like to vote for um trading bosses which one would you like to vote for starsky and butch starsky and butch creepy thank you which one would you like to vote for trading bosses Which one would you like to vote for? Archie and Butch.
And we've got a winner, Skye? Yes. P1 Jim is our winner for picking Eddie and trading blouses. You are free. There it is. And for the record, Eddie, it's not necessary to I am me. I'm the greatest writer of all time. Are you kidding me? Just for the record. Are you kidding me? Just for the record. P1 Jim? Are you there? Yeah. Congratulations. Great show today, guys. Thank you very much.
So dumb. You've won something cool. Hang on the line, will you? Sky, would you like to give us the runner's up? Oh, yeah. You're so dumb. I threw it away already. You're too busy throwing me under the bus. That's true. All right, coming in second place today, we have Sean with Starsky and Butch. And bringing up the rear is Mikey with three disses. I certainly was. Okay, I'm going to give you guys something, and I need to... I have not been outside yet, so I've got to get some fresh air and weed. Weed?
No, not weed. Hey, are you smoked? I thought you said that. That's what you said. Okay. Let's see. Charlize Theron is talking crap about Halle Berry. That's one thing that you guys can talk about. And the other thing that you guys can kick around is the sixth night of violence that has just taken place in the Paris suburbs. That's kind of an interesting story. Skye, all right, I'll be back. Okay. Well, let's start with the story about Paris, and then we'll move on to Halle Berry and Charlize Theron. So, yeah, this is really weird.
Like in the Paris suburbs, last night was their sixth night in a row of violence from teens who they're calling angry youths that live there in the Paris suburbs. I guess what happened is last week, two teenage kids were running from the cops. and ran and hid in a power station to, like, hide from the cops and ended up getting electrocuted. They, like, electrocuted themselves. It wasn't the cops' fault or whatever. But, you know, all the teens there are now kind of practically rioting, you know, blaming the cops, lashing out, whatever.
So last night was, you know, the biggest night of that for them. They had, like, 15 cars were burned. They were throwing stones at, like, firehouses, police officers. They were throwing those, what are they, Molotov cocktails? Molotov cocktails. Yeah, like the town hall. So kids are just getting out of control there. All right, cool. Let's take phone calls. Okay, yeah. Let's have fun. Okay, thank you. All right, Mikey Show. Yeah, I got a question. If I was to listen online, how do I do it? Go to MikeyShow.com and then click listen to the Mikey Show online. Is there some kind of, is there a link or no?
Yeah. Where's the link at? Jesus, dude. Go to MikeyShow.com. It's right there on the front page. Yeah, it'll be obvious. It'll say click here to listen. Okay, thank you. Okay, bye. Mikey Show. Yeah, are you guys going to be playing any more games pretty soon? Probably, I don't know. It depends. I mean, we got so much crap coming up. We got the movies coming up. You got to turn your radio down, sweetie. Do you know what a P1 is? Sorry. Do you know what a P1 is? Yes. What is it? It's a person that gets right to the point, doesn't cuss. And?
Oh, shh. Oh, you almost wrote real bad. And what? I don't remember. Turns their radio down. There you go. All right, thanks. Mikey Show. Yo, Mikey. Yes. Hey, it's P.O. and Firelight, man. What's up with the going inside the studio? Oh, yeah. Eddie, what's up with going inside the studio? Have we worked anything out for that yet? Why, you want to come in? Yeah, of course.
All right, hang on. It's that easy. Wow. Look at you. Ashley, what are you saying? I don't know. Ashley's trying to tell me something. I can't IM you because it's idle, so you have to shake the mouse. Oh, Jesus Christ. Thank you. Oh, my. And it didn't matter. You could still do that. You can still send it to me. I don't know about that. Oh, no. All right. Oh, sweet. What, what, what, what? Dude, this is awesome.
I'm so glad I'm getting to do this. Oh, no, what? From the Baltimore Ravens, former San Diego State Aztec, Will Demps calling in. Whoa. What's up, Will? How you doing, buddy? What's going on? What's up, dude? Doing good, doing good. You doing all right? You know what? I feel pretty good. How do you guys feel so far? We're not feeling too bad after a tough loss on Monday night, but we're hanging in there. Yeah, dude. So now, for people that don't know Will, Will is a safety and is a great player, former Aztec, and, you know, I'm happy to have you on the show because, I mean, I got a bunch of questions for you. Do you get back to San Diego very often and able to watch games? Oh, actually, I was there when we had a bye week a couple weeks ago.
Checked out San Diego State game when we beat San Jose State pretty well. And actually, I was there a couple days. Actually, I left today. You know, we had two days off after Monday night, so I kind of got away and came back to San Diego. Enjoyed the nice weather you guys had for two days and had me some good Mexican food. And I kind of enjoyed myself. Yeah. Will, what do you miss most about San Diego? The weather, the people, and just, you know, the lifestyle, you know, just laid back. You know how it is out here in San Diego, just the food, weather, and just, you know, good times. That's awesome. Yeah. That's awesome, man. Yeah. Now, I'm going to ask you some questions about the Ravens because I'm curious. Okay.
You guys have a phenomenal defense. I mean, you guys are struggling with injuries this year. But talk to me a little bit about what it's like playing with Ray Lewis and Ed Reed and those guys. Oh, it's great. Like you said, Ray Lewis, seven-time Pro Bowler, just one of the best defensive linebackers you've ever seen in a game. And Ed Reed, you know, young safety along my side. We came in together in 2002, defensive player last year. So a lot of people don't know. It's just an honor to play with those guys and contribute to what we want to do as a defense and continue that Baltimore legacy, a great defense. It's exciting, but like you said, injuries are kind of the place where we want it, and we're having a tough start.
We're 2-5, and we want to know what we want to know, and we kind of have to see what we've got to see and just got to move on from that. Yeah, well, what do you think is the key right now to you guys? Why are you struggling? Is it you think it's just injuries? Is it that the offense isn't performing? What's going on with you guys? I don't know. It's kind of hard to say. NFL, it's just a hard thing to pinpoint. There's a lot of guys that just say, okay, maybe we just don't have the great players or just things ain't falling the way they are. A lot of things happen. We're not getting the breaks we want. We have so many penalties this year just for the lack of not getting things done on both sides of the ball, like stopping the people on where we should stop on third down.
A lot of things play in effect. As long as we play as a unit, those things will kind of deplete itself and then we kind of move on. But we're just getting the rough end of the stick. And I think right now we just kind of understand, you know, We only locked up one point against Pittsburgh, and people had us down by 13 points with the spread. But we made it exciting. But things like that, we've just got to pull off and finish the game and understand that it's a long season, and we've got nine more weeks. I wanted to ask you about that, Will, too. Does it seem like there's an extraordinary amount of penalties being called this year? Is it just me, or are they throwing the flag more? Oh, I think it is.
I don't know if they're paying the rest on the side. I don't know about that, but it's exciting. I don't know. It's not exciting on our part to say that, hey, you know, I think we tied the record with 21 penalties against Detroit. You know, I think it's tic-a-tac-a-files. I think you can't question a guy's passion, you know, going to get a quarterback or, you know, trying to cover a guy one-on-one. You know, you just got to let him play sometimes. It's kind of like basketball. Yeah, and it is football, Will. I mean, you know, it's a contact sport. You know, I guess people want to see, you know, the offense score a lot of points because that's what it is because it's more exciting. I don't think they want to see this.
You know, a lot of people are like, if you have a girl which you don't understand football, Why is it all the fact that you've been thrown out? Why do you keep stopping the game? I don't think it kind of depletes the purpose of enjoying the game and understanding what's going on and just let them play and have fun and understand the game. I think, like you said, I think it's kind of more kicky-tacky this year. It's a catch-22. How do you like that, Will? It's probably a catch-22. I understand that. That's crazy. Yeah, you know, you mentioned Monday Night Football and you guys played a tough loss against the Steelers on Monday. What's worse? You just get blown out or a game like that where you kind of lose in the last minute.
Like you said, you know, it's kind of weird in the NFL. You know, there's no more victory or, you know, a game that close. But, you know, as long as you play hard. But I know you're saying it's kind of catch-win-two again because, you know, it hurts because you were so close. If you were never so close, you didn't have that anticipation of winning the game. But it's kind of hard because you play every game to the whole 60 minutes. So you can't really say, you know, here and there, if we're just blown out, it's been better. But, you know, it's kind of hard with the loss. You just, in the league, it doesn't matter what your stats are. It's all about the W's and L's at the end of the game. Yeah, exactly. Well, Will, I really appreciate you calling in, man. It's good to hear from you, and we miss you here in San Diego.
Hopefully, at some point, you get to play for the Chargers. Oh, that'd be great. You know, I love the powder, you know, uniforms. The powder blues. Everybody talks about those. We love the powder blues, man. I mean, you know, you catch a couple of bolts a game, go San Diego Supercharged, even though being an AFC guy, I can't really like that sound. But it's exciting, you know, but it's a pleasure having me on here, and, you know, thanks for having me. All right, buddy. Thanks a lot for joining us. Oh, no problem. You take care. Take it easy, man. All right. Bye. Will Demps. Demps. From Baltimore Ravens. Do that. I went into my pregame show mode there. Sorry, guys.
