The show shifted entirely to coverage of the Southern California wildfires, with hosts Mikey, Eddie, Skye, Sean, Ashley, Boston Rob and Zeth providing updates and taking listener calls. Officials including Mayor Jerry Sanders, fire chief Bill Metcalf and Red Cross representative Gail Falkenthal urged evacuations, explained reverse 911 calls, and listed shelters such as Qualcomm Stadium and local high schools. Listeners shared personal stories of wind‑driven dust storms, flames visible from homes, and experiences helping neighbors, while off‑topic moments like the Kid Rock Waffle House fight and a returning prank caller added levity. Throughout, the program emphasized staying off phones, avoiding non‑essential travel, and heeding evacuation orders to free resources for firefighters.

Alright, it's KIOZ San Diego, and we're going to leave the COGO broadcast right now, but if we need to go back to it at any point, we will. I also want to remind listeners that we are going to have reports, up-to-date reports on these fires. These fires that don't have a name yet, by the way. There's so many. They have all individual names. Yeah, there's six different ones. So, as we get information... We're going to be passing it along to you. And in addition to that, at the top and the bottom of the hour, we're going to give you updated reports. So as a option, P1s, you can listen to the Mikey show like you normally would. And I'm going to tell you right now, you're not going to hear the normal stuff that you hear. We're not going to be doing any of our regular content. We're going to be talking about the fires. And so we'll take phone calls from people that are affected by it, information. Just know that if you're giving information. See, now I'm real firm about information stuff. I'm always like, I don't want to say anything on the air that I don't know for a fact, blah, blah, blah, blah. I'm like old school 1970s TV broadcasting. So if you're going to call in, I would expect that.
You're doing the honorable thing. You're in an area where you know what's going on, okay? Sky is collecting information as we go along. Yeah, I'm doing my best this morning, P1s. It's tough. Stuff is changing so quickly, but I'm going to do my best to get you the most accurate, up-to-date info on all this. And, you know, like I said, we're going to have those top and bottom of the hour COGO reports. So I think we're going to be in pretty good shape in terms of trying to get you the information. Kogo is available for you for the nonstop stuff. We're available for you for top in the hour and talking in between. And phone lines open 570-1053. You can call about this stuff. This is what we're going to be talking about today. The email that I got from Shauna said that these fires are very quickly turning into that Cedar fire type of situation. So what was yesterday.
Two fires is now many fires. Six, Skye? Six fires from the border up through Fallbrook. Yeah. Okay. You're listening to The Mikey Show. I'm the host of the program. There are seven people on the show. So as you're listening today, you're going to be hearing from seven different people on the show. Myself, Eddie, Skye, Sean, Ashley, Boston Rob, and Zeth. I got my finger on two triggers. One is Kogo. So I can give you stuff that's coming from Kogo. And I've got television on in front of me as well. So if there's a news conference or we see something that looks urgent, I'll get that on right away so that you'll see that right away. I also need to let people know that San Alejo Hills is being evacuated. And my home is close to San Alejo Hills. And so I have my phone on. It'll ring today. So should everybody on the show that's got a home that could potentially be threatened. And if my wife calls and we're getting evacuated, then we're going to go to Kogo. Because the fires are close to where we are. She's already starting the process. So that's that.
The thing is, is that, so I'm going to get some of your phone calls on here in just a second. The thing is, is that there is other things happening in the world. I'll sprinkle those in in doses. In fact, for some of you, it might be kind of nice to hear, you know, we all kind of get jacked up in situations like this, a little wound, a little tight. Yeah. relevance in terms of what's important right now with fires going on, it may be, at least for a second, a little bit of a nice distraction to hear about the World Series, to hear about little NFL, to hear about that kind of stuff. Don't take it as, oh, come on, guys, that's not what I want to hear about. I'm giving you the option. We're going to be here for all kinds of information, and some of it at some point is going to include entertainment. You know where you can get the information that you need, and we're going to keep providing it to you as well. So Six Fire Sky, I interrupted. Where are they?
Okay, well, so we have the Harris Fire, which is the one burning down by the border, down north of Tecati, out of the Hummel area, the Potrero area. So that's actually the one where we had the one fatality reported. They believe an illegal immigrant was out in that area and got early, you know. Got caught up in it? Yeah, got caught up in the fire and perished. So that is the one fatality. How do they know? Um, that's just what they're saying. You know, it's, it's really tough when crazy things like this happen and you're trying to report the news. Like we all remember from nine 11, you're getting different information from all sides. So I read one place this morning that they are not releasing any information about the person who died out in the Harris fire. Uh, but by the way, Skye, I mentioned it's so okay. If I ask you something and you don't know, it's totally, yeah, if your answer this morning is, I don't know, that's over. Okay. Don't worry about it. Happy birthday, by the way. It's Skye's birthday. Happy birthday. Thank you. Big 30. I woke up this morning and went outside and went, I get it. It's your birthday. Way to let me know. Way too many candles on that kid. That's right. I know I'm getting old. Thank you for pointing it out. Skye's 30 years old today. Too bad. What did you say today, Zeth?
Seth had an interesting take on Sky's birthday. It's like the perfect storm of weird things happening. Red Sox go to the World Series second time in five years. Sky's 30th and hell rises from below the earth. It's actually pretty accurate. So anyways, in regards to this one fatality from the Harris fire, you know, there's conflicting information. Some are saying no info is being released. Some are saying, yes, it was an illegal immigrant who was out there and got caught up. So that's one. Then we have the Descanto. That's where your sister is, right? Descanto. Thank you. Fire, which is about a 200-acre fire, they say, in that, you know, valley near the 8. So we got that one. We got one that started in Fallbrook. They're saying this is a smaller of the fires. This is out on East Mission Road in Davis Drive, started shortly after midnight in Fallbrook. What's being called the Coronado Fire is the fire over by Cal State San Marcos in the San Marcos area. That one started about 2 o'clock in the morning. They say more than 4,000 people have been evacuated in the San Alijo Hills area. Of course, Cal State San Marcos, all classes will be closed there. They did start doing the reverse 911 calls.
in that Cal State San Marcos, San Alijo Hills area. What does that mean? It's a reverse 911 where 911 actually calls you. and you hear a message, and it's saying, hey, a fire's coming, or whatever the message. I heard last night that they were going door-to-door to a lot of places trying to make sure people were getting out like the elderly. That they didn't get the message, yeah. I just talked to a guy at Starbucks that was evacuated from San Alejo Hills, and he said that the way that they're doing it for San Alejo was they had cops going up and down the streets with their sirens to kind of get everyone's attention. Then they come on with a bullhorn and say, Get up out this bee. Yeah, so that area, the Discovery Hills, San Alejo Hills, you know, and in that area, Escondido High School is, you know, your evacuation shelter there. And then we have the San Pasquale Fire.
which is threatening. That was a transformer that went down in the middle of the night that sparked that one, threatening the wild animal park, branched into Rancho Bernardo. Evacuations now going on in the Rancho Bernardo area. Last report, I heard that the fire has moved through part of Rancho Bernardo, has actually jumped the 15. So, you know, we'll check in and get the latest on that. And then, of course, we have the Witch Fire, which was the one in Ramona, the big one where pretty much all of Ramona was evacuated last night. So that one is still burning as well. And those are just the ones in San Diego County. Of course, there's other ones in other parts of Southern California. Does anybody know or has anybody heard how any of these started? You know, I know you mentioned the downed power line on one. Yeah, transformer, a power line. I've heard, but, yeah, not on the other ones. This is crazy. Yeah, so they're showing it right now, all the different ones. And I'm counting now 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7. Oh, yeah, that McCoy one I hadn't seen on the map before. That looks like it's way out in southeast county, way, way out there, you know. Okay, this I want to hear. I was a little distracted, and he was telling me that...
Escondido High School apparently is at capacity right now. They can't set up any more cots there. I guess all the folks trying to leave Ramona ended up there, but he told me there's plenty of room here at Mission Hills High School, and it really doesn't look very crowded right now. They said they're going to be setting up cots in the gymnasium coming up here in just a little bit. They said they can probably hold about 150 comfortably and about 200, you know, if we all squeeze in together, that sort of thing. So, right now, it's looking about 90 to 100 people. And, you know, nobody's thinking of sleeping at this point. I mean, most people are talking and worrying and drinking a little bit. You know, the one thing last night that I heard that was a bummer was that they weren't flying any airplanes, you know, with the water. And they didn't say why. Common sense to me was just kind of like, well, it's nighttime. There's smoke. They can't see the tree lines. The winds. The Santa Ana winds. And they're hoping that the winds will die down. So even when we get some daylight out there that they can start. So they can't do it with a wind? That's what I heard this morning coming in. Because the winds are so crazy. They say like...
where it's in one of my figures here but on some of the hilltops like we're talking crazy crazy mile per hour winds going through just yesterday in the day this was 11 o'clock in the morning yesterday our neighbor had an umbrella uh that you know was like one of those kind that you put over a picnic table and it ended up in our backyard oh yeah you know i mean it was getting real crazy yeah like our house because we're in a northeast escondido our house was shaking like crazy all yesterday and it was like dust storms moving through our yard like so when you'd look out it like you know it looked like you were in the middle of a dust storm in the desert it was crazy what about last night in the middle of the night um last night yeah a lot of rattling waking up to the rattling and shaking you know went to bed to uh the glow Looking at the glow over the hill from the Witch Fire, the Ramona area. And then woke up to seeing the flames from the San Pasqual area actually coming over a hill. So there's a good piece of the city of Escondido in between my home and those flames. But, you know, we have learned from the Cedar Fire, you never know. The wind shifts. I mean, really, everybody needs to be alert and aware and paying attention today.
Marcos and obviously they weren't letting anybody anywhere near there and but yeah I mean you definitely can see you could see the flames and you know it's scary because you're you think to yourself you're you're so close and and your house is so close so so yeah I definitely could see that and not only that but because of the winds there are a lot of trees just kind of that have tree branches that have fallen and they're just kind of laying around on the roads and so you don't Because it's been so dark out here, you don't see them until you come right up on them, so that's been another issue as well. At least it was for me when I was driving around. Let's take a couple phone calls. P1 Nick? Yes. What's up? Not much. Hey, I was just on the 15 for an hour and a half at Gridlock Traffic going north. Camino del Norte, that's where I was stopped. I finally got off and turned around, and they're now closing the 15, all clear back to the 56. Oh, my gosh. So I thought I'd call in and let you guys know so you don't have to sit in traffic like I had to. Thank you very much, man. I appreciate it. Yeah, not a problem. Hey, Ash, what are you calling these? It's in the middle in light yellow. Let me ask again. What are you calling these? Oh, FM. Well, I'm not calling them anything. They're reports. I'm just going to keep them in the same spot. Okay. What is it called? FM News Primary. Thank you.
Really, I mean, I just need to know what's called to find it. Good morning. I'm Delaina Bennett, and here's a news update from the AM600 COGO News Center. There are several fires burning in San Diego County this morning, and there are widespread evacuations going on. Let me give you an update of where the fires are, then we'll get to evacuations and school closures. In Fallbrook, a fire burning. Also in the San Pasquale Valley, where the San Diego Wild Animal Park was threatened this morning. The Coronado Hills Fire is burning, where at least 100 acres have been burned, and as many as 4,000 people evacuated from that area. The fire started near Cal State San Marcos about 2 a.m. and has scorched about 200 acres. The Descanso Valley Fire near Interstate 8. Near Ramona, 5,000 acres have burned. In the so-called Witch Fire in Petrero, also a fire burning, where the so-called Harris Fire... has blackened more than 14,000 acres, killed one person, and injured 17 others, including four firefighters. At this point, the fire has crossed the 15, and Mayor Jarrah Sanders is urging all of you who may live in that area to evacuate your home as soon as possible. Qualcomm Stadium has been opened for the purposes of evacuations. As far as school closures today, Hamul Del Zura School District, Hamul Primary, Hamul Intermediate,
Also, Oak Grove Unified, Greater San Diego Academy, Valvery Christian Academy in Chula Vista, Ramona Unified School District, Poway Unified School District, San Marcos Unified, Julian also has been evacuated. Mount Empire is closed today. Cal State San Marcos, Palomar. Mountain Elementary School in Valley Center, high schools in Escondido, San Diego Hebrew Day School in Kearney Mesa, Grossmont School District, and Helix Charter are closed today. And Steel Canyon High is closed today. Let me mention, San Diego City schools are open today so far, that is the information that we have. There are some mandatory evacuations to tell you about. And that includes close to 700 homes evacuated between Otai Lakes and Barrett Lakes, including Del Zura, Barrett Junction, and Engineer Springs. The communities of Potrero, Tecati, Del Zura, and parts of Deerhorn Valley have been evacuated. There are thousands of reverse 911 advisories going out at this point this morning. For more news and information, make sure you tune to AM600 COGO.
So that's the latest. We're going to give you stuff at the top and the bottom of the hour. That was the one that we had for the top of the hour. So in about 14 minutes, we're going to have a brand new one for you. Take some phone calls. P1 Greg? Yeah. What's up? I was just wondering if you guys knew whether Palomar College was closed or not today. Sky has a list of schools. Yeah, I don't see it on the list. Cal State San Marcos is on the list. I know they just announced that San Marcos school district, but no mention yet of Palomar College. Okay, thank you. Breaking news. Where does it come from? It is under FM News Update number two. Okay. And this is brand new? Yep. Good evening. I'm LaDonna Harvey with the latest fire evacuation news here on AM600 COGO. New evacuations have been ordered for 3,100 people who live in San Diego Country Estates and the Black Canyon areas. These areas are now under a mandatory evacuation as the winds have once again kicked up and created very dangerous conditions. If you live in San Diego Country Estates...
and the Black Canyon areas, because of what's happening with the Witch Fire, you do need to go ahead and evacuate now. I'm LaDonna Harvey. That's the latest news from AM600 COGO, San Diego's news and talk station. It's amazing how you can live in San Diego for years and years and years and years, and then you hear an area you never heard of. I have no idea where that is. But to the people that live there, you know where it is. You heard. Again, we're going to be getting these updates a lot, so I'll go right to them. As soon as we get them, I'll go right to them. Let's see. P1 Jason. Yeah, hey, what's up, Mikey? What's up, man? Hey, just let all the P1s know they live in Santee Lakeside. Don't even try taking the 67 out towards Poway. They've got to completely shut down. They're turning everybody around. Okay. All right, dude, I appreciate that. All right, guys, have a good morning. You got it.
Man, it's going to be... Okay, wait a minute. We got a county news conference. Oh, here we go. You're being asked to evacuate. Here's Mayor Jerry Sanders and Ron Roberts first, stepping up to the mic now. We got everybody in here? Okay. Ready to go? Okay. Good morning. I can't hear you. Sounds like our show. Okay. Good morning. I'm County Supervisor Ron Roberts. I'm Chairman of the Board of Supervisors. We have had a very long night, and we have a very, very dangerous situation we want to brief you on. Before we begin, I want to extend our sympathies to those people who have been impacted by these, what are now several fires burning in San Diego County. We've had a number of people that have been injured, and we've had a number of structure fires throughout the county.
I also want to thank all of the emergency responders who are continuing to work under extremely difficult conditions. This morning we want to share some of the latest information with you. We have a number of people to speak to you. We also want to stress and get the message across. affected areas and the affected areas have grown significantly since yesterday. We are extremely concerned with people who are not listening and who are waiting to be asked more than once to leave their homes. They're creating a dangerous situation for themselves and for others. The 2-1-1 system is up and running and is available with information along with everything else that's out there. This morning This fire has spread now into the City of San Diego area and specifically in a significant way into the Rancho Bernardo community. I've asked Mayor Sanders to join us here and to share some comments with you. Thank you very much, Supervisor Roberts. I want to stress to all the residents in San Diego that we're putting out evacuation information as quickly as we can.
But this fire is moving very quickly, faster than sometimes we can even get all those calls made. So you really need to pay attention to what Supervisor Roberts said. Watch your TV, listen to the radio, and be prepared. Have your car packed right now if you haven't already been told to evacuate. We're evacuating now everywhere north of Highway 56, east of Interstate 5, west. of 15 and south of Del Diaz Highway. We'd like people in those affected areas to evacuate now. And as I said, the fire is moving very quickly. We have opened up Qualcomm Stadium with city personnel. Red Cross is maxed out. They have shelters all over the county. We'll be using city personnel to open Qualcomm. That will be open at 6.30 a.m. or in about 10 minutes. And that's one of the sites that you can go to. We're also working with the county and the state on the Del Mar fairgrounds for people who go west so they can access that. We'd also like to ask you to please minimize your cell phone usage. Emergency responders, emergency personnel need to have the capacity to use their cell phones. The more people that get on that, we're going to have sites that will go down or get jammed, and our emergency personnel are using that.
along with all the other radio equipment. We have dispatchers working on all of those, but right now they're absolutely maxed out in every way. So if you have any thought about evacuating, if you see a fire, if there's one in your neighborhood, please leave immediately. Don't wait for somebody to tell you to evacuate. Have your car ready and evacuate to Qualcomm. There's other sites around the county. And hopefully the Del Mar Fairgrounds will be open in the not-too-distant future. Thank you. Thank you, Mayor Sanders. To bring you some of the latest information on the fires, we have Chief Bill Metcalf, and Chief Metcalf is our overall fire coordinator. Thank you, Supervisor Roberts. Again, my name is Bill Metcalf. I'm the fire chief for the North County Fire Protection District in Fallbrook, and I'm the county's area fire coordinator. And also here with me is Chief Tracy Jarman from the San Diego Fire and Rescue, and she'll also be available here in a few moments. We are here to talk to you this morning about an extraordinarily dangerous fire situation. We're used to here in San Diego County that fires start in the afternoon and we watch them on the evening news and we go to bed at night and they calm down overnight. It's all over with in the morning, and that's not what has happened here at all.
In fact, the situation has gotten dramatically worse overnight, and we were faced with a situation this morning which is worse than many of us could have imagined just a few short hours ago. Overnight, the weather remained warm and dry, and the winds, if anything, increased in almost every area of the county, and that did not bode well for fire behavior. We continued to see rapid fire spread. extraordinarily long flame lengths, 100 or 200 foot flame lengths, and truly explosive fire behavior. And that's resulted in some significant changes in the fires that we're seeing here in the county. The first fire, the one that we're most concerned with at this point, is the Witch Fire, which is the fire that started near Witch Creek this afternoon east of Ramona. That fire last night made significant runs. into the community of Ramona and moved dramatically farther towards the west and has developed two distinct heads, one that has gone down the San Pasquale Canyon and the other that is threatening to go south into the Barona and Lakeside areas. That fire continues to move very, very quickly.
the wild animal park in the San Pasquale area last night to form a new fire there. It was called the Guajita Fire, and those fires have now combined. They've crossed Interstate 15 at Lake Hodges and are into the northern parts of Rancho Bernardo currently, and we expect that the winds will continue to push them down the Del Dios Highway and into the Rancho Santa Fe area. That is the most extraordinarily dangerous situation that we're facing today. But that's not the only fire situation we're facing. The Harris Fire in South County continues to move dramatically towards the west. Overnight we saw significant structured loss and structured damage in the communities ranging from Takati to Barrett Junction to Dulzura. That fire continues to burn towards the west, aimed now directly at the Otay Lakes area. And again, that fire continues to move dramatically and do a great deal of destruction as it does. In addition, overnight we saw a number of new fires. One was the Guajita Fire, which I just mentioned. We also currently have a significant fire burning in the Coronado Hills area of San Marcos.
It currently stands at 250 to 300 acres. It is, as with the other two fires, it's basically 0% contained. And they are struggling with limited resources to try and bring that fire under control. We also have a developing situation in the Rice Canyon area, which is east of the 15 between 76 and Rainbow. Basically, between the 15 and the Paula Reservation on Rice Canyon Road, where there's another significant fire that is making significant runs pushed by the wind and pushed by the fuel. All in all, it's been a long night, a very dangerous night. We know there have been people hurt. We know there's been property that's been lost. But we want the community to know that everyone in the fire community is putting out 100% and more to deal with this situation. Almost every, if not every, fire resource in San Diego County has been committed and is actively working on fire suppression. I guess I should clarify that in most cases, we haven't been able to do much fire suppression. As I talked about earlier, you don't get in front of these kind of fires that are pushed by the wind and squirt a little water at them and they go out.
It's an extraordinarily dangerous place for firefighters to be. And on the best days, we are confined to doing flank perimeter control. But one of the issues that we've dealt with in all of these fires is that we've been unable to do any suppression efforts because in most cases the fire resources are being used or having to pull off and do rescues. Rescues of people who in most cases were asked to evacuate and didn't. didn't evacuate at all or delayed until it was too late. And those folks who are making those decisions are actually stripping fire resources away from the fire suppression efforts where we might be able to slow this thing down. You're going to hear lots of us plea for folks to leave when they're asked to evacuate. And I want to add my plea to that. The job that our firefighters have to do is dangerous enough and we need them to be able to concentrate on their jobs, and we can do that by you helping us leave when you're asked to evacuate. Again, I just emphasize this is an extraordinarily serious fire event, an extraordinarily dangerous fire event that is nowhere near finished. We expect the weather to continue for another couple of days.
And there's an awful lot of 0% contained fire line out there. We're nowhere near finished. Please stay on your guard. And again, please pay attention and please leave when we ask you to evacuate. Thank you. Listening to a live news conference right now. We can say it enough. If you're asked by any of the firefighters, any of the police officers or any of the deputy sheriffs to leave your house, please do it immediately. We can't. wait to ask you twice. Chief Tracy Jarman is here representing the city of San Diego. I'll share some of the issues the city is dealing with right now. Good morning. Needless to say it's been a volatile evening. Situation that extraordinary conditions. One of the challenges that we've had is our aircraft can't fly in these conditions. We're grounded basically because of the winds and the visibility.
We were able to get Copter 1 up to give us an idea on how quickly the fire was progressing. But other than that, we had to put them back on the ground. It's just one of the challenges, and we as a region have come to rely on that capability to give us that chance to get in there and make the good fight. We have 240 firefighters, 60 engines in the Rancho Bernardo area, trying to hold the line to keep it from passing under I-15. It went under I-15. We tried to get in front of that. It's just moving so fast, which is why we've declared north of I-56, east of I-5, south of Lake Hodges. We need to clear that area out because I can't tell you right now how fast it's going to go and whether it's going to go south or keep going west. As the sun rises, it changes the winds, and it will shift the direction potentially. To be on the safe side if you're in that area, I suggest you make plans to vacate your house. The fire service is working well together. It's just one of those days that is beyond our capability. A lot of the firefighters are risking their lives. They're out there in harm's way. We've had a lot of close calls. If you're asked to evacuate your home, please do so. We've gone back into harm's way and risked our lives to try and get you out of your homes.
I'm sorry for anyone that's had a loss, lost at home. We'll do the best we can. We'll keep you informed, and I appreciate your support. Thank you. Thank you. Chief Sheriff Bill Collender is here to share with us the Sheriff Department's efforts. All right, so we're going to continue to do our business as we usually do until one of us gets a phone call that says we're being evacuated and we've got to go. You're listening to The Mikey Show. It's Rock 105.3. And we're going to give you information at the top and the bottom of the hour. Breaking news that we have at the top and the bottom of the hour. If you're somehow waking up in a part of San Diego that you don't know what's going on, there's fires. There's fires in San Diego. There's wildfires burning in up to seven places unless they've added another one. But if you look at a map of San Diego County, it's north and it's east. That's where you're seeing these fires, north and east.
from the far eastern point of the county and as far north as, I believe, Fallbrook. Right, Skye? Mm-hmm. So we'll give you info as we get it. Something else I want to know. Does anybody know when the Cedar Fires were going on? Because when the Cedar Fires were going on, the Mikey Show wasn't on the air here. I was on at night, but I wasn't even living in San Diego. I was on at night from San Jose. And we were doing the morning show in San Jose. So I don't remember. How long was the Cedar Fire? From the time that it became news to the time that they put the last of the Cedar Fires out, how long was it? Was it a week? Was it two weeks? Was it half a week? I don't remember. I wasn't here. Take a couple of phone calls, and then we've got to take a break. P1 Cool Beans. Hey, Mikey. I just want to let you know that the Sony building in Rancho Bernardo, they're definitely closing that down now.
Talk to the security guard there as well as the building manager. Okay. If anybody's heading to work to Sony in Rancho Bernardo, they really shouldn't. Okay, man. Appreciate it. Thank you. You know what we're going to do? I really want to utilize a new tool that we have, the P1 Text Army. As we find places that are being evacuated, I want to send out a blast. That way people that don't know can get that on their text, may not hear it on the radio. That's a good idea. So we'll send out a text. So, Zeph, get ready with that. I may have you start sending out some texts. And I'm getting information that when that fire was burning, it would burn for a week. So we'll see. 570-1053. And when I come back, we'll probably have a new update for you. It's Mikey. This Sunday is live on pay-per-view. WWE News. Cyber Sunday. It's the same thing? Good morning. I'm Delaina Bennett from the AM600 COGO News Center.
Here are where there are several fires burning this morning in San Diego County. At this point, at least seven fires fueled by strong gusting winds are burning, forcing evacuations all around San Diego County. And now evacuations have been ordered in Rancho Bernardo and Poway as the fires surge west. The Witch Fire has penetrated the northeast section of Poway and all residents east of Espanola Road from Lake Poway Road through Valley Verde Road have been asked to evacuate immediately. This includes the High Valley, the Bridalwood Country Estates, Stone Ridge, Heritage, Old Coach, and Old Winery neighborhoods. Now residents are being notified by telephone through the reverse 911 system. And the city of Poway has declared a local emergency and activated the local emergency operations center. Other fires burning around the county at the... This moment fires in Fallbrook, the San Pasquale Valley, where the San Diego Wild Animal Park has been threatened. The Coronado Hills Fire, where at least 100 acres have been burned and at least 4,000 people evacuated from there. Also, the Descanso Valley Fire near Interstate 8. Near Ramona, 5,000 acres have burned in the Witch Creek Fire.
Thousands of people evacuated. In Potrero, where the so-called Harris Fire is blackened more than 14,000 acres, that killed one person and injured 17 others, including four firefighters. Now, the latest evacuations because of the fire heading south and west from Escondido people living north of State Route 56, south of Lake Hodges and east of Interstate 5. If you're wondering where to go, evacuation centers open this morning. Westview High at the 56 and Camino del Sur and Mount Carmel High in Carmel Valley on Carmel Mountain Road. Also, Mira Mesa High. They can take up to 2,000 people. They are out of cots at this point, but no one will be turned away. And because of the number of people who have been ordered to evacuate at this point, Qualcomm Stadium has now been opened. That's a safe place for you to go. An emergency shelter has also been established at the Poway Community Center on Civic Center Drive. Large animals can be brought to the Poway Valley Riders Association's arena, also known as the Poway Rodeo Grounds. School closures this morning. Hamul Del Zura School District.
closed. Hamul Primary, Hamul Intermediate, Oak Grove Unified, Greater San Diego Academy, Calvary Christian Academy in Chula Vista, Ramona Unified School District, Poway Unified School District, San Marcos Unified, Julian Also, the Mountain Empire School District is closed today. Cal State San Marcos will not be meeting. Dehesa Charter School in Escondido. Palomar Mountain Elementary School in Valley Center. High schools in Escondido. San Diego Hebrew Day School in Kearney Mesa. Grossmont School District and Helix Charter. Steel Canyon High. Escondido Charter High and Escondido Adventist Academy. All those schools are closed. At this point, San Diego Unified is open. And we will keep you updated on whether or not that changes. For continuing coverage and fire information, tune to AM600 COGO. Okay. So the phone call that I just got was from my wife who said that she got a phone call that was automated that was saying to be on alert that we may have to evacuate. And so if she gets a phone call back saying we're going to evacuate...
then I'm going to just switch us over to Kogo and try to get home. But we're giving you the info as quick as we get it. As soon as Ashley says we got something new, I'm putting it on for you. And we're going to get Rick Lawrence on here in just a second, too. And Rick is going to give us an update in terms of traffic, because traffic's a mess. I'm sure. And people are waking up this morning and wondering, should I go to work? What's going on? Where should I go? It's crazy. Very scary. I would call your bosses your work to see, too, before congesting the roadways. Call and see if you have to go in or not. Yeah, that's a great idea. No reason to be out there if you don't have to be. No. The smoke is so thick out in certain parts of the county. You know, just even driving through with all your windows rolled up is, ugh. Let's see. P1 Nessa, are you there? Yes. You were going to answer the question about the Cedar fires and how long those fires were around. They were around for about three and a half days to four days. It was in 2003 of October. Where did you, Zeth, where were you getting the info that it burned for a week?
Well, that was just what I remember. I know it was going solid for like three and a half, four days, but I think until it was entirely gone and the smoke had cleared and the ashes were died down, it was like a week before. Yeah. I just did a report from my school on that about a month ago, and it's actually kind of scary because everything is exactly how it was happening before. Well, in the Cedar Fire, were there fires burning in multiple locations? Yes, there was. There was actually three. There was one in, I believe it was over in, like, kind of the Ramona area. There was one in the southern area, kind of over by... Wasn't there Julian? Yeah, I think there was. Julian was, I know. Anyway, thank you. I appreciate the phone call, Nessa. The latest that we're seeing now is eight. Eight fires burning. Yeah.
This is crazy. And, you know, a lot of the evacuation shelters at different high schools around the county are filling up. So the latest announcement is that Qualcomm has been opened as another evacuation center. Okay. Rob, lose line five. Lose line five. Go ahead, Ash. You can say anything. We'll have a traffic update in like one minute. Okay, cool. Just so people know. Awesome. Cool. Rick. is very busy doing about a billion stations right now. He's swamped. Yeah, and probably each traffic report probably takes him like five minutes because there's so many closures. It's insane, yeah. It's too bad that, you know, places of business can't just get a hold of all their employees and just say, hey, stay home, will ya? You know, I mean... Yeah, well, and some people are, you know... Unless you're a place where you gotta, you know, like hospitals, grocery stores, stuff like that. Of course, yeah. But, you know, some people are still sleeping. Like, they're just totally...
clueless and their alarm's going to go off and they're going to find out a lot's going on today. Qualcomm, by the way, they said open for people to go to if they need to evacuate. Qualcomm is open. They have people working out there to help you. Yeah, and there's... 211 is a number you can dial for a non-emergency fire-related issue. So obviously, if it's a huge emergency, 911 is what you need to call. But if it's a non-emergency fire-related issue, 211 is a good number to have handy. Rick's ready. All right, we've got the report. Okay. Well, as you can imagine, our commute, it's going to be a mess this morning because of the closures due to the fires here this morning. The 15 completely shut down. From the 78 down to the 56. That is really affecting our commute completely as this fire has hopped the 15 freeway on the westbound side now, threatening homes in that area, which is being evacuated. Your only route right now is that 78 to get out of there, and that is jamming up as well as that South on 5. That's completely jammed up out of the North County all the way down in towards the racetrack in Del Mar. Just a mess here this morning, and lots of service streets getting in and around, trying to get out of this area, just back to big time right now.
The East County commute's looking okay into the county, but right now the I-8 completely shut down from Willows Road to the 79. Also, you've got the 94 closed from Otay Lakes Road to Forest Gate. Traffic out of the South Bay is getting heavier now as well on both the 5 and the 805 northbound. Coming up out of Chula Vista through National City on both these freeways, 805 seeing some slow traffic now in the North Park. Then again out of Kearney Mesa over the 52. I'm Rick Lawrence on Rock 105.3. You know, I'm... The thing that's making me nervous is being separated from family. Obviously, that's a case for a lot of people of being separated from family. So it's going to be very important for everybody listening, myself included, everybody in the studio, to stay in contact with loved ones so we know where everybody is. P1, Robert. Hey, Mikey. Hey, what's up, Robert? Hey, not much, man. I was just driving through the Fallbrook area, and the fire's over there on the east side right now, and the wind is just blowing hard, man. I drive a truck, just a regular old truck, and it's getting blown all over the road, and it's getting a little bit heavy. I got a friend in Fallbrook evacuated right now. They live on Mission Road, so that's something that everyone should be looking out for, too. All right, dude. I appreciate it, man. Thank you. No problem. Yeah, that wind. I mean.
Just the absolute worst thing you need is the wind is blowing hard, man. I mean, last night, you could hear it just howling. And I thought, with fires going on? Come on. It's brutal. 570-1053. Real quickly, to kind of get your mind off of it for a second, the Red Sox won and are going to the World Series again. Wow. You know, my wife was real surprised that it happened. I said, I'm not surprised they're going to the World Series. They would surprise you if they win it. That was the problem. That's been the problem. They get to the World Series. That's happened in the past. They beat Cleveland Game 7 last night, 11-2. Dustin Pejoia went off, had a big game. Now they take on Colorado in the World Series and it starts on Wednesday. Rob, it's a good position for you to be in because...
Colorado Rockies have had a lot of time off, and that screws with momentum. Yeah, that's what I'm hoping. Honestly, I think that that's kind of where you are. Just to be a fan of the teams in New England right now is a good thing. I don't know, six touchdowns yesterday, Tom Brady? That was disgusting. Dude, I was watching it, and I was thinking to myself, I believe in my heart of hearts, Joe Montana is the greatest quarterback of all time. I mean, I've seen that guy win some Super Bowls, and I've seen him do amazing things. That Tom Brady is making a run to be that. Well, you know, what the deal is to me is, you know, when you look at what Joe Montana and a lot of the great quarterbacks have done in the past, they've had talent around them. And Tom Brady's never really had a lot of talent around him. And now that he does, you're seeing what he can do, you know, what he truly can do. Can you imagine if he'd had Randy Moss? over the last five years. You know, the other weird thing, you know, watching it is he's throwing into triple coverage. Well, it's like the Randy Moss from, you know, the Minnesota Vikings days, you know, where it's just pitch and catch. You just throw it up. He jumps up and he catches it into, you know, triple coverage, which is crazy. Like, he made two catches yesterday in the end zone that, to me, were...
You know, disgusting. It was crazy. And what do you do? Put four guys on him? Five guys on him? Okay, because they got other... They got Dante Stallworth. They got Wes Welker. They got Ben Watson. They got now Kyle Brady's catching touchdowns. It's crazy. I mean, they're nuts. That team is real strong. Good luck. Real, real strong. No new update yet, but when we get it, I'll get it right on to you. Sky, are you seeing anything new? No, I'm just reading everything that we have recently heard about the recent evacuations and the fire jump in the 15 and the 15 closures. So the 15 is just shut down? The northern part of the 15. I believe Rick said from the 78 to the 56. I'm trying to think. Where is the 56? That's the one that goes into Del Mar. Is that what they call the Del Dios? No, no. Ted Williams Parkway, the 56. Oh, I got it. It cuts to the 5. Oh, my. Yeah, so from the 78. That's a lot of area. Yeah, there's a lot of stuff. And the 8's closed from, like, Willows out, you know, past all that area, which is, man. It's like there's getting boxed in here. Yeah, it's a scary feeling. And as if the fires weren't bad enough.
Kid Rock got into another fight last night at a Waffle House. Was it last night or the night before? This is the apocalypse. Well, early yesterday morning, so about 5.15 a.m. Saturday night into Sunday. Sunday morning, 5.15 a.m. Sunday morning. All right, well, we have to take a break, and I'll give you details on the fire. Should have a new update coming up. New update coming up, and I'll fill you in on that story, too. Hang on. I am a very good driver, but terrible Parker. Sky. For the record, I will not respond to him. Sean. I have cried while watching Star Trek. I'm kind of the transient of the bunch. And Ashley. I love penguins. They're my favorite. On Rock 105.3. All right, so it's a Mikey show. It's a little bit different than you're used to hearing. It's KIOZ San Diego. And it's a little bit different than you're used to hearing the Mikey show. The reason is because of all these fires that are going on. And so we're trying to give you the latest as we can. It is 7.01. The governor has declared a state of emergency in seven counties in Southern California, including San Diego. The Red Sox come back to win game seven, beating Cleveland 11-2. Their take on Colorado in the World Series starting on Wednesday. So the live pictures that we're seeing are fires that are burning in Rancho Bernardo. So if you're in the Rancho Bernardo area, definitely get a hold of family, make sure that they're okay.
Keep your ears on television and also the radio. We're giving you updates as soon as we get them. P1 David? How's it going, Mikey? What's up, man? Hey, I'm driving south on the 5, and I'm about Santa Fe Drive now from Acadia. It's just a wall of smoke. If I look behind me, I can see that it's daytime, but as soon as I start looking south, it just looks like it's almost nighttime. Just a wall of smoke all the way out to the ocean. south is moving about 20 miles and below. But the northbound 5 looks pretty good. Doesn't look like it's backing up at all. Okay. I appreciate that, man. Have a good one. Alright, we'll see you. P1 Jordan. Hi, this is P1 Jordan. I'm just calling to say that the Vista Unified School District is closed. Vista? Yes. Okay. And how did you get the information? We just got a call saying that the Vista Unified School District is closed due to
The fires and the air and how it's hard to breathe. Okay. Okay. So I just thought I'd let everybody know. Thank you very much. Thank you. Bye. I'll tell you what we need is rain. That would be great. Oh, how awesome would that be right now? If we could just get a torrential downpour. Absolutely. And just for these winds to die down, because the wind is what kills them, man. That's the worst. The wind whips it up so much, and then it carries the embers. It's fire's mistress, Mike. That's right. It's fire's mistress. It is. What? 5701053. You have information. Love to hear it. 570-1053 is the number. I'll tell you what, man. It's one of those deals living here. A lot of people don't even realize it when they come to San Diego, you know. But it's part of the deal. It's part of the deal with living in the beautiful area that we live in is that these fires and the threat of them is around.
So I'll give you traffic updates as I can. I will give you news updates on the fire as I can. There's nothing new that I can tell you right now that I have. But as soon as I do, I'll give it to you. So Saturday night, early Sunday morning, Kid Rock does a show in Atlanta, walks into a Waffle House in Atlanta, sits down with an entourage of people. And what happens? Well, I guess some guy, another customer at the Waffle House early Sunday morning, around 5 a.m. Sunday morning, had an exchange of words with a girl, woman, who was in Kid Rock's group. And I guess Kid and five other members of his entourage didn't really care for whatever this other customer was saying to this chick. So they took it out into the parking lot, got in pretty much a brawl. Kid Rock and five members of his entourage were taken into custody on misdemeanor charges of simple battery. spent about 12 hours in jail and was released last night on $1,000 bail. So he had to spend the night in jail? Well, the fight happened about 5 o'clock Sunday morning, and he left jail Sunday night. So they say he spent about 12 hours in jail starting Sunday morning into Sunday night and posted bail, left, and they say he even signed autographs for fans on his way out of the jailhouse.
Something tells me if he were in the city of Los Angeles, he wouldn't have spent 12 hours in jail. You think? It's usually about 12 minutes when you're in L.A. and you have any kind of hit record out. Right. But when you're eating at the Waffle House, you know what happens there. You know you're taking the lawn to your own hands. Don't cheat me, bro! Let's see. P1 Josh. Yes. What's up? What's up, man? I was just driving up in that area and, you know, Now you're headed which direction, north or south? South. You're headed south.
Yeah. So traffic going north on the 5, I'm guessing, was pretty... It's just, it's horrible. Yeah. You can't even see anything in front of you. It's just, like, debris keeps hitting your car. It's bad. The what keeps hitting your car? Debris, like, debris, like, smoke, and, like, there's, like, branches and stuff on the freeway. And you're talking 5 north? Yeah. Oh, boy. Okay, man. I appreciate it. All right. No problem, dude. It's not going to be easy to get home, Sky, for me or you. I think it's going to be kind of impossible to get home. Will you look at what they're showing live right now? Yeah, they're showing Rancho Bernardo. That's brutal, man. It would certainly be likely that that would be the case, that certain types of foliage that may have been dried out and have been certainly spread by the wind. And as you travel from the 15 Highway eastward, there's certainly... There are certainly many structures still standing, and you would think that the wind is certainly carrying some of these embers and igniting parts of the landscape which can ignite some of the houses. It's certainly not a wall of fire since the homes that are on fire is sporadic and spread out.
There's a pretty good chance. I've been in your shoes there where the camera can actually see better than you can at times. And we did just see that historic, a classic car sitting in the driveway of that burning home. You mentioned moments ago that these people left in haste as they should, rightfully so, but leaving behind, you know, probably a very cherished automobile. Certainly inside that home's many items that they will see as irreplaceable. cherished items that are gone as well. But the car in the driveway kind of shows their hasting in getting out of that area. You know, I wonder how insurance companies are to, if you have insurance, you have fire insurance, and you got the whole deal. Right. Obviously, in situations like this, a lot of policies are going to be called up. Okay, I need help, you know, and it's going to be a ton of them. Yeah. I wonder how these insurance companies are prepared to deal with a rush of them and come to aid. Well, I do remember back from the Cedar fires because this even went on like way...
after you know we had already moved here because we weren't here during the cedar fires but we moved down here after it and i remember reading in the news even at that point that people were still fighting with their insurance companies um over you know losing their house and rebuilding and trying to get the money that they believe they deserve from their policies you know it's just which is unbelievable it's like right after you go through such a tragedy then you have to fight the red tape to get back what you pay into every month it's just ridiculous But, you know, insurance company, it's a business like everybody else. You know, they want to make their money, too. P1 Alicia. Hello. Good morning. How are you? I'm good. How are you? Good. I'm calling from Camp Pendleton. And looking towards the southeast and the east area, you can totally see the Fallbrook fire. Like, the smoke is just, like, enormous. And then there's, like, a huge wall of smoke. all along the southbound area. You know what was unbelievable to me was watching TV just last night at, say, 4 o'clock, and there was already, you know, just enormous wall of smoke. I can't even imagine now. Yeah. With eight fires burning, I can't even imagine now what it must look like. I mean, it looked like it was, you know, filling the horizon. And that was just with two yesterday.
Yeah, we went out to dinner for my birthday last night. And so we live in Escondido, but we went out to dinner down by the airport. And I mean, it was when we drove last night at, you know, about 530. It was a wall of smoke from South Escondido all the way through Mura Mesa for us. And I was just like, you know, I've never experienced anything like this before. It's just, you know, and you're watching the sunset and the sun is like just bright red, you know, through the smoke. It's very, very scary. People that have listened to the show for any length of time know that I'm a very strong believer in my faith. And my faith always teaches this lesson that if you have a lot of people praying for something, it's even more powerful. The impact of it is even more powerful. So if you do believe the way that I believe and you're hearing my voice right now, say a prayer about what's going on because all of us doing it together is very, very powerful. Personally, my prayer would be for rain. Torrential downpours would be great to help with these fires because these firefighters are stretched to their limits right now. And it isn't like we can really get a lot of help from other communities because those resources are being, you know, Los Angeles, we haven't mentioned it once because we are, you know, we're experiencing our own emergency, but Malibu was decimated.
That's from Malibu to Mexico. I mean, it's really bad. Yeah. So they're calling out help from all the way up to Northern California for firefighters to come down. You know, hopefully we can get those tankers up in the air today. We couldn't yesterday. The wind and the smoke wouldn't allow them. Yeah, they really need that. They really need that. So hopefully they can do it. We're going to take a break. And when we come back, hopefully a new report for you. Game Show 105.3. Wyoming is booming with jobs, and businesses are looking for workers. It's been from the get-go. Dropped running pretty much when I got in here this morning. As you can imagine, the fires have really caused havoc for our commute here this morning. The 15 freeway completely shut down from the 78 in Escondido all the way to the 56 here in Carmel Mountain Road. If you're heading north in the 15, basically they're just going to head you west on the 56. Of course, southbound 15 traffic, you're going to go west on the 78 right now. And that's, in fact, your only route out of Escondido. And as you can imagine, the 78 is completely jammed up, just gridlocked, as well as that southbound 5 out of the north county. That is just a rough one from here all the way down into Carmel Valley. The 56 is mighty busy as well here. Just a mess. And they're calling for evacuations east of the 15 freeway through the Rancho Bernardo area here. And now they're even talking about evacuations in Del Mar, believe it or not. It's actually heading that far west where the wind's really gusting up. It's just insane.
Right now you've got traffic on the 8 also shut down from Willows Road. to the 79. Your 94 freeway close from Otai Lakes to Forest Gate. Traffic of the South Bay is pretty typical here, though. It is jamming up here. About the 5, 805 northbound. Pretty backed up out of Chula Vista up to National City. 805 continues slow here in through North Park. And then you've got the heavy backup again out of Kearney Mesa over the 52. The westbound 8. And here's another, just of all days, our usual computer speed screens where we have the sensors on the road letting us know where the traffic is stopping and slowing and all that stuff. Completely down. It's going Computer system is just wiped out for some reason, and I can't get any proper speeds, but I've got a good guess. We've got one guy in the air telling us what he's seeing. So you're going to find, I'm going to imagine, the westbound 8 pretty backed up as usual into the Cajon Valley, then again through La Mesa into Mission Valley. West 94 pretty backed up out of Lemon Grove to the 805, then again into downtown. I'm Rick Lawrence on Rock 105.3. He's a pretty busy guy today. I'm just going to tell you now, it's going to be a long day. It's going to be a long day.
Because this stuff is going to be going on for a while. Our deal is, what we want to do is stay on with you, tell you what we know, and just update you as much as we can with the latest. As far as I know, Sky, we're up to date in terms of what's going on. Yeah, we've definitely... We covered all the closures. Just to reiterate what Rick just told us, the major closure is the 15, which is closed from the 78 all the way south to the 56 in both directions, going north and south. You can't use the 15 between the 78 and the 56. The latest evacuation, which we've already mentioned, but we'll mention it again for you, is in the Lake Hodges area. Pretty much anything from west of the 15, From Lake Hodges down to the 56, they're saying, hey, be prepared, get ready, and, of course, east of the 5. So between the 15 and the 5, from Lake Hodges down to the 56, that big square area all in there with all the canyons and the Rancho Santa Fe and the Del Dios Highway and all that area, they're telling you, get out, just, you know, get out of there. That is a pretty large...
Swath. And, I mean, like we've talked about before, Poway and Rancho Bernardo, pretty much. Get out of there. Let's see. P1 Jason? Yes. What's up, Jason? Hey, I just wanted to let you guys know my mom lives on Del Dios Highway in Rancho Smith, and she got the reverse 911 call to evacuate, so I just wanted to give you guys an update. For people that are listening that don't know what the reverse 911 call is, tell everybody what that means. It means that 911 is going to give you a call and tell you to evacuate. That's as far as I know. That's what my mom told me. So I just wanted to update you guys on that. She got a call in Rancho Santa Fe? Yes. And she lives off Del Dios? Yeah, off Del Dios, like right by about a mile west of Lake Hodges. Gotcha. Okay, man. Thank you. Thank you so much. Let's see. P1 Adam. Are you there, Adam? Yeah, I'm here. Go ahead. Hey, Mike, I just wanted to remind you to remind all the listeners to use their cell phone as little as possible because that jams up the frequencies for, like, firefighters and stuff like that. Thank you, man. That's a good point. Appreciate it. We got to do this real quick. Broadcasting from the Cricket Wireless Studios. The sound of healing. Oh, well, you're welcome, San Diego. KIOZ, San Diego's Rock.
No matter what we're doing, Ash, you can tell me on the air. You can remind me to do that. I'll do that top of the hour every hour. P1 Joe. Yeah, I just want to let you know, Mikey, I got a phone call from my child's school out here in the La Mesa Spring Valley School District that they're going to be shutting down because of the air quality and stuff like that. And my son goes to Highlands Elementary, and my daughter goes to Spring Valley Middle, and they both got calls saying that there's no school today for over here in the East County. Okay. All righty. Like every minute that ticks by, the list of school closures grows longer and longer. It's like two pages, this list of school closures in the area. I don't know. I mean, isn't there a way to just, they should just tell all of San Diego County, just shut them down, will they? Yeah, seriously. For goodness sake. Let me read this to you because there's a whole bunch of them. Let's say, would I go too far to read you some school closures? Yeah, it's quite a list. The list is pretty long. Let's see. Mara Mesa High School. Maranatha Christian School in Rancho Bernardo. Alliant International University in Scripps Ranch. Grace Lutheran School. Private School in Escondido. Islamic School of San Diego. San Marcos Unified School District. Grossmont Union High School. Helix. Helix Charter. Cal State San Marcos.
Alpine Union School District. Center for Children and Family. Cal State San Marcos. Julian School District. Winston Private School in Del Mar. Bethel Baptist. Preschool Escondido. Good Shepherd Catholic School. K-8 in Mira Mesa. Cajon Valley Unified School District. Santa Fe Christian School in Solana Beach. Cathedral Catholic High School. Christian Unified Schools of San Diego, the Classical Academy Charter School in Escondido, a Brighter Future Preschool in Sereno Valley, Solana Beach. That's what we got so far. And then, like we told you, that big swath of land between the 15 and the 5, all the way from the Del Dios Highway up north to the 56 down south. A big, big stretch of land. Go ahead, Ashley.
All right, we've got a new update on the fires. There we go. Good morning. I'm Delaina Bennett, and here's the latest from AM600 COGO. At least seven fires fueled by strong gusting winds are burning this morning around San Diego County, forcing evacuations all around the county. The entire city of Ramona has been evacuated, and there are mandatory evacuations going on in Rancho Bernardo and Poway as the fires surge west. Now, San Diego County officials have... also ordered the evacuation of a huge area east of Interstate 15 between Del Dios Highway and Highway 56. So people living north of State Route 56, south of Lake Hodges, and east of Interstate 5 being evacuated. Among the communities that are affected, Rancho Santa Fe, Carmel Highlands, Rancho Bernardo, Delmar Heights, Fairbanks Ranch, and parts of Rancho Penasquitas. The Witch Fire has penetrated the northeast section of Poway and all residents east of Espola Road from Lake Poway Road through Valley Verde Road have been asked to evacuate immediately. This includes High Valley, Bridalwood Country Estates, Stone Ridge, Heritage, Old Coach, and Old Winery neighborhoods. Fire is burning now in Fallbrook. Also in the San Pasquale Valley where the San Diego Animal Park is being threatened.
The Coronado Hills fire is burning. At least 100 acres have burned there and as many as 4,000 people evacuated. The Descanso Valley near Interstate 8 is burning. And near Ramona, 5,000 acres have burned in that Witch Creek fire. In Petraro, it's the Harris fire and that has blackened more than 14,000 acres. It killed one person and has injured 17 others, including four firefighters. There are some evacuation centers you should know about if you are affected by these evacuations. Escondido High School is now open. Steel Canyon, Santana High, Westview High at the 56 in Camino del Sur, and Mount Carmel High in Carmel Valley at 9550 Carmel Mountain Road. Mira Mesa High. And because of the number of people who have been ordered to evacuate, Qualcomm Stadium is now opened for evacuations. An emergency shelter has also been established at the Poway Community Center. That is at 13094 Civic Center Drive in Poway. And large animals can be brought to the Poway Rodeo Grounds if you have them. School closures. Hamul Del Zura School District. Hamul Primary. Hamul Intermediate. Oak Grove Unified. Greater San Diego Academy. Calvary Christian Academy in Chula Vista. Ramona Unified School District. Poway Unified School District. San Marcos Unified.
Julian. Mountain Empire is also closed today. Cal State San Marcos. Dehesa Charter School in Escondido. Palomar Mountain Elementary School in Valley Center. High schools in Escondido. San Diego Hebrew Day School in Kearney Mesa. Grossmont School District. Helix Charter. Steel Canyon High. Escondido Charter High. Escondido Adventist Academy, Escondido Union High School, Escondido Elementary, Cajon Valley Union School District, Christian Unified School District, Palomar College, San Pasqual Union, Spencer Valley School District, Valley Center, Palma Unified, and Vista Unified. I'm Delaina Bennett. For continuing coverage, tune to AM600 COGO. That's the latest. Mikey Show, P1 Dave. Hey, Mikey Show, good morning. What's up, man? Well... I'll give you a little update up here. I elected to stay. I was through the Cedar Fire four years ago. Where are you right now? I'm in the country of states, up on Rutherford Road, all the way up on top of the mountain. And I sent my family about 4 o'clock down to a safe area. I have a lot of firefighting experience, so I elected to stay. This is by far probably five times worse than the Cedar Fire. The winds are still blowing about 65 sustained.
up here, and we didn't lose any houses on the street. I just drove around the neighborhood, and I don't think we lost the structure, but thanks to the San Diego Fire Department and CDF. But it's been an interesting evening. I just walked into my house finally for the first time. I was helping my neighbors and getting all the horses out, and I'm black from head to foot from soot. But just wanted to give you guys an update that most of the structures up here, if not all, that I have seen have not burned. just basically the hills and the mountains. P1 Dave has firefighting experience, which I think is pretty relevant and something that should be noted, because when you are told to evacuate, we heard this morning from the mayor, you have to evacuate. The reason is... Right now, some of their resources are being strained on rescuing people that have been told to evacuate that haven't evacuated. That's correct. And that is taking away resources that they would normally be using to fight the fire to help people that decided that they didn't want to leave. I actually asked a sheriff and the CDF guy. I said, hey, I'll go if you want me to go. They asked me a few questions, and I gave them, I guess, the right answers.
If you want to elect to stay and serve your property or your neighbors, that's fine. And especially that you have firefighting experience. I mean, the fact that you have firefighting experience, I think, is good. Yeah. Hey, man, I really appreciate the phone call, Dave. Thanks for calling. All right, Mikey. Have a good one. All right, you too. P1, Chris, are you there? Yes, sir. Yeah, go ahead. Good. Hey, Mikey, I wanted to have a question about the reverse 911. Mm-hmm. It says, I'm trying to call and it says, the telephone facility is having difficulties or whatever. Will the 911 bypass all that and let my wife know, hey, get the heck out or whatnot? I am assuming that that 911 call is a pretty priority kind of deal. And so I'm going to take a guess that it probably will. But the best thing for you to do is to keep your radio and television on.
and uh for a time to evacuate and in terms of you trying to figure it out on your own hey man you got to use your best judgment if you are outside and you can in any way see flames in the distance got to use your best judgment get out of there right i i just got turned away from work to head back home because 76 everything's getting closed so i got an hour and a half drive to get back to the house i just want to make sure my wife could get out before i get there or what You know, whatever needs to happen. All right. Hey, Chris, I appreciate the phone call, man. Thank you, Mikey. P1 Logan. Logan, are you there? Yes, I am. Go ahead. Yeah, I just was leaving Lakeside, coming out of Lakeside, heading into El Cajon, and I saw the flames trapping the mountains at Verona, starting to head down the hill. So I got home as quick as I could to get my family and get out. I'm heading down to Qualcomm now. There you go. Appreciate the call. Qualcomm's open for people that need it. And that tells you what a big deal this is. Qualcomm is setting up to take people that obviously that are getting evacuated and don't have a place to stay. More updates after this. Well, the ride this morning is considerably heavy, as you can imagine, in and out of the North County right now. In fact, you don't even want to be in the North County. That's where everyone's trying to get out of right now. The 15 completely shut down from the 78 to the 56 here because the fire has jumped the 5 freeway. And as Sky has been mentioning, of course, evacuations now anything east of the 15 and north of the 56 pretty much. The westbound 56 is just a mess. As people head north of the 15, they've got nowhere to go. You're being transferred on to the westbound 56, and that is gridlocked from the 15 all the way to the 5 freeway. As you can imagine, the westbound 78 quite heavy as well coming out of Escondido over to the 5 freeway. And that's southbound 5, pretty much gridlocked.
Here from Oceanside all the way down to the 56 on this side as well. We've got other closures in effect on the I-8. Now shut down from Willows Road to the 79. You've got the 94 closed from Otay Lakes Road to Forest Glen. And then you've got both the 5805 northbound. Pretty much the typical slowdown out of Chula Vista up to National City on both these freeways. 805 jamming up again through North Park. And then heavy again out of Kearney Mesa. Over the 52. Right now we've got speed screens down. So I'm giving you my guess as best I can here. In the westbound 8. Jammed up out of the Cajon Valley. Out of El Cajon. Then again through the Mesa and the Mission Valley. West 94. Slow out of Lemon Grove to the 805. More brake lights from the 15 in towards downtown. I'm Rick Lawrence. I'm Rock 105.3. All right, welcome back. we're giving you as much information as we have as soon as we get it we get it on the air for you there are approximately eight fires burning i would love to talk to somebody that has anything to do with a wild animal park uh because earlier we were off the air talking about what do they do with the animals yeah that's something we're kind of curious about uh
Sky, do you have anything new? Are you seeing anything new yet? I got a little update. What do you got? No non-essential personnel citywide are asked to go to work today. Oh, wow. Basically, if you don't need to go to work today, check with your bosses, obviously. That is anybody. Here's your phone, dude. They're pretty much saying that. Call in. Call in to work. If you don't have to clog up the... the you know traffic or use don't use your cell phones and stuff like that do your best yeah no everything's fine we got a call that says that we may have to evacuate but uh i'll call you and let you know stuff later okay that was that was uh wendy my friend wendy who lives in san alejo hills who got evacuated oh really yeah and i called earlier to see if she's doing okay and she was calling back to say yeah they're fine they're out of there oh good turner little girl uh and That's a question that I have too of like, when will they let you back? Yeah. And how do you know when you can go back?
If they evacuate you, how do you know when you can go back? Yeah, because there's probably that kind of information if you're at a shelter or whatever. But if you're, like, staying with a friend or something, yeah, how do you get the, you know, the all clear? I'm guessing you just watch television and listen to the radio, but I don't know. I mean, I guess that's what I would do. That's definitely what I'd do, too. You guys notice that here in the Clear Channel building, you can smell the smoke in the building. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. Pretty strong. I don't think there's anywhere in the county that you can't smell the smoke. Oh, no, Eddie. This time, it's actually not Zeth. It's not Zeth? Oh, you're not talking about cigarette smoke? No. Yeah, no. Usually, Zeth reeks of smoke. That's true. It's like all you can smell when he walks into the room. I smell it here. Yeah, and Sean's in San Francisco. He can smell them. But, no, right now, it's this smoke, the fires that are burning. Lose line three because we don't know, and I don't want to answer. We shouldn't. Actually, actually, Rob, keep line three because maybe there's somebody that's listening that does know. Let's do it that way. Judy, are you there? Judy, are you there? Judy wants to know if anybody knows if the medical clinic in Ramona is open. Is the medical facility in Ramona open?
I think Ramona is shut down. Yeah, from my understanding, they evacuated. Ramona is completely evacuated. Wow. The entire place. Let's see. P1. Tim, are you there? Yes, I am. Go ahead, Tim. Yeah, I'm actually calling to wonder if anybody's heard anything about what to do with your pets today. I live, like, around the Mission Beach, Pacific Beach area, and obviously there's smoke around the area, but I wonder if that's kind of a danger to your pets and what you should do with them. That's a great question. If anybody's listening that knows the answer to that, call us at 570-1053. It's a really good question. Let's see. Updates as they get them? On the news, they keep showing footage from Rancho Bernardo and you're seeing multiple structures, homes burning there. Let's see. The World Series is going to be the Red Sox and the Rockies because the Sox won last night. And it is... freezing in Denver. I mean, that World Series is going to be a weird World Series. It was 26 degrees in Denver last night. Oh, my gosh. Oh, man. So when they play the World Series in Denver... Maybe some snow. There might be snow. That's crazy. How weird is that? Shauna's on the inside line, and she's got the answer to the pet, what you do with your pets. Oh, cool. Shauna, what's the deal with the pet thing? You're supposed to leave your pets indoors.
and windows closed and fans or air conditioning on because they shouldn't be breathing in all the soot and ash and stuff. And I've seen several reports that if you have larger animals, you can take them to the lakeside rodeo. Yeah, that's for like the horses and stuff in East County. But if you're just in the San Diego area and you're getting the, you know, you have dogs and stuff like that that are outside, you're supposed to leave them inside your house. All right, thank you very much. And there's new reports now that because you know how they shut down the 15 from the 78 to the 56. So everybody's being funneled onto the 56. And they say that the 56 going westbound is just completely backed up. Just bumper to bumper. Stay off the roads, people. You don't have to be on them. Like Eddie just announced a little while ago. If you're not a essential city personnel, you're being instructed to stay home today. Call your boss. Make sure that your boss knows about.
But, you know, the city is requesting that people please just, you know, stay out of the way. All right, I'm going to go home. They're even encouraging people to refrain from using cell phones. Yeah. If you are an employer, I want you to be cool. When you're getting these phone calls today, it's not your employees trying to get the day off. Let them off. If you don't work for the city and your employees are calling you today, let them off. This is a much bigger deal than you. Don't realize if you're having your guy come paint something today. All right. Okay? I mean, the fire literally jumped to 15, and it's in houses. I mean, this is horrendous, people. So, you know, you got to be real wary of that. P1 Mitchell? Hey, Mikey. Hey, what's up? I just want to let you know, I just drove by the county courthouse that worked there. And the one downtown, as of right now, they're not letting anybody in. So I'm not knowing if it's closed or not. They are. I noticed that that's one of the reports that courts today are going to be closed. Okay, just wanted to let you guys know, so, you know, downtown's not the best place to come, so just be aware. All right, thanks. Again, if you don't work for the city, they're encouraging you to not go to work today. If you're worried about it, call your boss. If you're a boss, let him stay home. Right.
That's ridiculous. Yeah, I mean, you know how traffic is in San Diego. There's no reason to fill up these freeways right now. I mean, they need as much area and as much room to operate as possible. I mean, this is crazy. I mentioned it before. Malibu got it real bad, too. You know, that's where all the stars live. Oh, yeah. There's a ton of celebrities that own homes. all through that Malibu area, and that thing was going nuts yesterday, right, Skye? Yeah, I guess as of last night, director James Cameron, as well as singer and actress Olivia Newton-John, were evacuated due to the Malibu fires. They say other celebrities that live in that area, they haven't been evacuated as of yet. as far as we know. But in that area, they say people like Jennifer Aniston, Sting, Bill Murray, Nick Nolte, Sean and Robin Wright-Penn, Mel Brooks, Howie Mandel, Goldie Hawn, Linda Ronstadt, David Arquette, and Courtney Cox all live in that Malibu area. So just really, really scary. I think Brittany lives in that Malibu area too, right?
Let's see, is she... We've heard about her having... I mean, maybe not the same Malibu area. No, yep, she's here towards the bottom of the list as well. Tom Hanks, Rita Wilson. She's at the bottom of the list, by the way. Well, and Tom Hanks is at the bottom of the list, too, so I don't know what... What about Mel Brooks? Well, no, Mel Brooks was actually towards the top of the list. Oh, no. How strange. Oh, no. Not Mel Brooks. Yeah. So they're not going out by box office pool? I guess not. In terms of... No, they're not going off the board of the list. I see. Yeah. But really, really scary. So that's why the governor did, you know, issue a state of emergency for seven counties here in Southern California, obviously, including San Diego County. Let's see. P1 Don? Or no? Nope. P1 Don? Don, go ahead. I've only lived in San Diego, not even six months. I'm from the East Coast. And I can deal with blizzards and tornadoes and stuff. But this is scaring me. Well, I got to say how and like how long does this stuff like last? Because, you know, I went to bed last night. There was like two fires. I wake up today. There's eight. My son doesn't have school. He's worried about our dogs. Well, here's the deal. Let me explain to you. And it's a good phone call to take, especially for people that are new to the area. This is something that is always a possibility living in San Diego County.
But what we're looking at right now is unprecedented in terms of its scope. There were the Cedar fires back in 2003, and those were three very large fires. Right, and I heard those were really bad. It burned down like all of Julian. And I heard some guy earlier saying that he's saying that these are worse than them. Yeah, well, what we're seeing right now is a situation that potentially is worse because it's more fires. We're dealing with winds that are moving very fast. And so it's not looking good. But this is something that, like I said, it's pretty unprecedented in terms of its size and its scope. I've lived in San Diego on and off for 14 years. And you don't see this every day, and you certainly don't see it every season. So every fire season. So this is unprecedented in terms of what we're seeing. Okay, so let me ask you this. Like, how serious do you, I mean, obviously it's serious, but how serious do you take it? Like, I mean, do you evacuate before they tell you to? Here's what you do. How serious do I take it? On a scale of 1 to 10, I take it at a 12. Of how serious I take it. It's serious. In terms of when to evacuate, first of all, look to your...
city officials to give you the reverse 911 call or for you to get an evacuation by police out in your neighborhood on a megaphone. But also, use your best judgment. If you are looking outdoors from your home and you can see fires, you need to get out of there. You need to use your best judgment and hightail it out of there. Where are you located right now? I am on my way to work, which is crazy because I'm not too far from Del Mar. What do you do for a living? I work for a moving company. Okay, they are saying that anybody that works, if you don't work for the city of San Diego, they are encouraging you to not go to work today. So my advice to you would be to call your boss. Oh, I did, and she's like, it's business as usual. Yeah, well, it shouldn't be business as usual. And they are making that announcement right now all over the news. Call your boss back and let your boss know that they're saying on the radio and on television that if you do not work for the city, they don't want you going to work.
All right. Well, that sounds good because I live like East County, like near Santee and all that. And I know like Poway's not that far. This is just too freaky for me. I don't know. I like the weather here, but I don't know. I might handle my blizzards a lot better. Yeah. Hey, listen, I'd understand it. People from San Diego, you make sacrifices to live in San Diego County. One of them is the price of living here. And the other one is that we have a threat of earthquakes and wildfires. And, you know, it's something that we have to deal with. This is just a whole new beast, and I really appreciate you guys giving me some advice and kind of putting my nerves a little bit more at ease. Call your boss. Let your boss know what they're saying on the radio and television, and get home. All right. Thank you very much, Mike. You guys try to have a good day. Yeah, you too. These bosses, oh yeah, business as usual. It isn't business as usual. It's nowhere close to business as usual. And if you're listening right now and you don't work for the city, call your boss and tell your boss it's not business as usual right now. Go ahead, Ashley.
Yeah, and just to let you guys know, we're not going to be playing any commercials this morning. We're going to be staying on. Oh, is that the new word? Yeah. Oh, really? Yeah. We can go to the Kogo feed whenever we feel it necessary. I'm really glad they did that. I thought that when we started. So we will keep you updated with traffic reports, you know, top and bottom of the hour, and then we'll be on keeping you updated. You know, Brent has a great question. And Eddie, if you can, even if you want to leave the studio to work on it, can you get somebody from the Red Cross on the line? If you can't, yeah. They may be a little busy, but I'll give them a try. Tell them who we are and that we have the opportunity to talk to thousands of people if they can come on with us. P1 Brent is wondering if there's a number to volunteer for the Red Cross or if you would like to volunteer for the Red Cross, how you would do it. And Brent, I don't know, but I'm going to try to find the answer for you, okay? Okay, awesome. I think it's a great question and it's one that I'd like to get an answer for you, okay? Awesome. Just keep listening. All right. Thank you. You know, Jason's got a great question, too. P1 Jason is calling right now and has a great question, too. So put him on hold. Jason, go ahead. I'm just trying to figure out how to get out of Rancho Bernardo. My wife and kids are up there. And I guess the 15 South is all closed off and 56 is backed up. Yeah. What do you recommend is the best route to get out of there?
See, this is something that I think is going to be very important for people in terms of, hey, listen, they're doing a real good job of telling us to get lost. Right. But what they're not telling us is how to get lost. How to get out. Exactly. Exactly. And I just, like I said, I know they're stuck. I guess when you're in RV, if you get to Camino del Norte, they're turning people different directions. You know, my kids and my wife are stuck by the kids' school, and there's, I guess, a deadlock on all the streets. Mm-hmm. You know, and so they're trying to figure out. You know what, dude? My suggestion to you is to keep listening to the radio and keep watching TV. Yeah, and it also can't hurt to try and call 211. They say that's the phone number for the, you know, non-emergency fire questions. So give that a try. I'm sorry, Scott. They'll refer you to sdcountyemergency.com, which I think is just being bombarded because it keeps timing out. Yeah, I tried to log on to that as well this morning. So hopefully from this, you know, we'll kind of get a new system in place or something. Yeah.
It makes it a little bit easier because it's things like this that make you realize you need something better. All right, dude. Thank you for the call. Good luck. All right. You guys have a great day. Yeah, you too. Hey, listen. We're trying to put information together for you as quickly as we can because the truth is that it's changing. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight. So many fires they say are burning right now. Fallbrook, San Marcos, San Pasquale Valley, Harris, Descanso, Witch Creek, Palomar Mountain, and one way out east called McCoy. So there is a lot of fires burning in San Diego County. It's just tough with those winds, man. Those winds are what kills it. P1 Joe. Hey, Mikey. Good morning. What's up? Hey, my whole concern is, I mean, I understand people, because I'm up in Vista right now, and I'm trying to get back down to downtown. People just need to realize that that wall out there is not overcast. It's absolute smoke. And, I mean, I see people...
with their kids in their car, people driving to work. And they need to understand. I mean, I just left the area actually where you live up. Because, I mean, I've been out here since 1 o'clock this morning up in North County. And people just need to understand to stay home. I mean, don't take your kids to work. You common sense as far as coming out here. Because there's guys like me that I've been working out here all morning that are trying to get back home. I mean, I'm trying to get home to my wife that's in Carmel Mountain. I mean, and it's almost impossible. I don't even know how I'm going to get back. to my actual, you know, home after I drop off my truck downtown and get back in. I mean, people just need to realize this to stay home and to stay away from San Diego, period. Yeah, no, that's, listen, that's the best advice. That's what they're saying on TV, on the radio. You don't work for the city. Don't go to work. If you're thinking it's business as usual, it's not business as usual. Call your boss and tell your boss it's not business as usual. And if your boss is saying to you, yes, it is, you need to come in, tell him, okay, great, we'll see you in court, idiot. Exactly. I mean, my boss actually, after 1 o'clock this morning, decided just for all of us just to come back. And, I mean, like I said, everybody just needs to use, you know, common sense. Like I said, that stuff's smoke out there. I mean, if I told you how many cars I've seen broken down this morning, not only just from the ash, people breaking down, I mean, their effort isn't going to get...
clogged up with this stuff. You know, people are just driving into this stuff like it's nothing. And it is. It's really bad. And take it from somebody that's been dealing with this stuff since 1 o'clock this morning. Also, you guys, I mean, you guys have to get home to your families. You guys are coming back out this way. I mean, it's good as day out here. But, I mean, if I look over to my right, it's black. It's night and day completely. I mean, I just wish people would just, you know, stay home, to stay out of it. Appreciate it, bro. Thank you for the phone call. Thank you. Bye. They're giving some road closure stuff on the Witch Creek fire. They're doing it in Spanish. Road closures, Witch Creek fire, I-8 closed to high-profile vehicles. What does that mean? Like big trucks and stuff, so they're more susceptible to the wind blowing them. Highway 78 closed at Magnolia and Rancho Santa Teresa. Highway 79 closed on the south end and SR-78 in Santa Isabel. Let's see. Was that another one? Highway 94 between Otay Lakes and Forest Gate. These are road closures with the Witch Creek Fire. Southbound 79 traffic diverted to Highway 76. Highway 79 closed at Highway 76 and I-15 closed in the area. I-15 we're hearing closed all the way.
From Del Dios Highway in the north all the way to the 56 south. Well, that's the evacuation area. But actually, 17 closed goes from 56 all the way up to the 78. So it's not, wait a minute, 15 is not closed? 15 is closed from the 78 to the 56. Oh, the 78 to the 56. And what you said is the evacuation area, which is Del Dios to the 56. So it's closed, 78, 56. Right, in between there. closed both ways, and then the evacuation, Del Dios, south to the 56, and we're talking about the area that is west of the 15, east of the 5. So that little square area in between all of there, you know, that definitely, they say, is affecting a lot of communities in the area. They say some of the communities include Rancho Santa Fe, Carmel Highlands, Rancho Bernardo, Del Mar Heights, Fairbanks Ranch, and parts of Rancho Penasquitos. All right.
570-1053. And again, Qualcomm has been opened for evacuees. Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's a big deal because a lot of you may be thinking to yourself, if you live in that big, gigantic area, where are you going to go if you don't have family? Qualcomm is one place you can go. Yeah. Other places are Mira Mesa High School, Escondido High School. Qualcomm's the best because a lot of these smaller high schools and community centers are already full, and so I think the best idea, if you can, just get to Qualcomm. They'll be able to take care of you there. Now, in terms of what we were saying earlier about if you don't have city business, if you don't work for the city, What, Eddie? There's a Red Cross person on the... Yes, or heaven forbid others. People overlook the pet, though, don't they, Gail? They don't have the food. And then if they get in a situation, they're actually sharing their resources down the line if they ever get to the point where they have to do that. Hey, Mike. I just point out... What do you got, Ash? We've got a woman from the Red Cross, and she's got a couple minutes. Okay. We have questions. Where? Which line? Line six. Hi, ma'am. What's your name? I'm Gail Falkenthal. I'm a disaster public affairs officer from the American Red Cross.
Great, Gail. We were just hearing you actually on television. So somebody called us and asked us if they would like to volunteer their services and help with the American Red Cross. Is there a way to do that? You know, at this point, what we ask people to do is call our regular number at 858-309-1200. Indicate your interest. We will start processing volunteers at our headquarters as we need them. That's the best way to do that, get into that pipeline. Okay. And what is the American Red Cross doing right now? At the moment, we're operating five shelters for wildfire evacuees. The locations are Escondido High School, Santana High School, Mira Mesa High School, Steel Canyon High School, and the Campbell Community Center. That's a place people can go for the very basics, to be out of harm's way, with a roof over their head, a place to sleep, get some meals. trying to make sure that they're kept safe while we deal with this big fire in the county. Okay. Gail, I don't want to take up any more of your time. I'll let you get back to work, but that's basically what I think the impact. Is there anything else that is pertinent that you guys would like to get out? People who do have web access can get the latest information at our website at S-D-A-R-C. That's the initials for San Diego American Red Cross dot org.
And monetary donations are a great way to help. We've got to put gas in the trucks to get the stuff out there. We have to pay for the stuff. And we found San Diegans are very generous. It's a great way to help. Great. Thank you very much for calling in. Thank you. And, you know, Sky, we should probably stay on top of that website and just keep checking it and seeing what we're getting on it and get the latest. Let's see. P1, Katie, are you there? Katie, are you there? Yes, thank you. Hello. Good. Go ahead. Okay, I have a question. My son's elementary school is probably three miles off the 15 freeway in Frawlbrook. And I was heading out towards the school, and I can see the fire. I'm not sure where it's at, how close it is to the 15. They've yet to shut down the 15 up this far. So my question was, do you know the location of the fire? I'm kind of concerned about them being outside, you know, with all of this going on. I'm just not sure where it's at. Well, I know the fire in Fallbrook. That's the one you're asking about, right? It broke out on East Mission Road and Davis Drive. Now, that's where the fire started. I don't know exactly where it is right now, but when the fire broke out, it was East Mission Road and Davis Drive in Fallbrook. Is your child already at school, or do you have him with you? No, he's already at school. My concern is that driving out towards the school.
The closer you get to the 15 freeway, the heavier the smoke is. Katie, you need to call the school. Okay. Okay? I need to let you go. We need to do a legal ID and profit. Broadcasting from the Cricket Wireless Studios. Oh, you're tired, getting sick, A's. Oh. KIOZ, San Diego's Rock. Rick, are you there? Yeah, I'm here. Rick Lawrence is with us now to give us an update on what's going on traffic-wise. It's a mess, as you can imagine. All this stuff out of the North County Mikey is just... Well, the good thing people are getting out. You've got the South 15. It's actually open. That part of the 15 is actually open to residents of Rancho Bernardo and Poway as you evacuate the area. North 15, you're getting cut off at the 56. You're being directed westbound on the 56. That is gridlock. That is a nightmare, trying to get across that 56 over to the 5 freeway. In fact, all those little side streets out of Rancho Penosquitos to the 56, like Camino del Sur and Carmel Creek and all that stuff, they're completely jammed up with residents just trying to get out of that direction. And this guy's been mentioning you've got the evacuation here blocked.
from the 5 to the 15 and the 78 down to the 56. Everybody trying to get out of the area here. So that has resulted on the westbound 78 gridlock from the 15 to the 5. 5, no doubt, is heavy from pretty much the 78 all the way down into Carmo Valley. Quite a mess here this morning. There's not a lot of alternates for you. You're just going to, you know, stay where you are if you don't have to evacuate, if you possibly can this morning. Otherwise, yeah, get your stuff and follow the orders of the... Of the authorities there. And, Rick, is it the same thing, northbound 5 all along the ocean? Is that just... No. That is okay. That is actually northbound 5. That's on the opposite side of our usual commute, and that is okay. If you want to go northbound on the 5, you're doing okay. You're going to hit a little heavier traffic than you normally do, but it's not quite as bad as that southbound 5 is, as people are still actually traveling to work with the usual commute traffic there. But we've got stuff in the East County as well here because of the fires out there. Now, the I-8 is closed between Willows Road and the 79. That not because of fire. That because of the wind is gusting out there. They had reports last night of some of the wind actually gusting up to 80 miles an hour. I can't even imagine that. That is crazy, man.
Totally crazy here. So folks in the East County along Willows Road, Alpine, I don't want to freak you out. There's no fire out there. It's the wind. That's why that is closed down right there. The 94 is closed, though, between Otay Lakes and Forest Gate because of fires in that direction. And I can't even tell you what the regular traffic is this morning. We've got our computers completely down telling us what the speeds are. I'm going to guess it's the usual. Commute traffic on the 894 getting into San Diego. In fact, you can give me a call. Please do at 858-467-0504. That's our total traffic tip line. One more time and do it slowly. 858-467-0504. Someone here will answer the phone, if not myself, and let us know if you're stuck in traffic on the 5, the 805 out of the South Bay or possibly the 8 or the 94 westbound coming in out of the East County. We'd certainly like to know what's going on. In fact, even the 5 freeway... We know for a time that it was backed up naturally. But our airborne guy, he can't even see the fire freeway from the air because the smoke is so thick. And that's sitting right on the coastline. So you can imagine how big this fire is and how much smoke it is actually putting out here. So there you go, Mikey. It's just a mess everywhere.
Please just, whatever the authorities are telling you, don't try to go on any back roads and this and that. If they're closed off, don't cross any lines. Do exactly what they tell you. We've learned a big lesson four years ago with the Cedar Fire and how to do this. And that's basically by following the word of the authorities and telling you where to go and how to do it. I'm McClarence, Rockwood053. Thank you, man. Appreciate it. To give you an idea of what I was talking about, and I think this is important. We talked earlier about the importance of, they were meshing on. television and on radio and through the internet and any way they can get this out. They want to let you know that unless you work for the city, don't go to work. We talked to a woman that called her boss that works for a moving company and the boss said, oh no, it's business as usual. It's not. It's not. It's not business as usual. If you're an employer, call your employees and tell them not to come in. Now, in terms of the scope of this, All you need to do is open your front door and you'll know how big this deal is. But if you sign on to CNN.com right now, it is the top story. And I'm getting emails from my friends from all over the country wondering how we are. And I'm writing them back. We got an evacuation standby on our home. Right now, the story highlight of CNN is rescue strain, fire resources, is California wildfires rage. Residents who ignored evacuation orders.
Divert fire crews from flames. If they tell you to evacuate, get out. Is that what you got? Oh, no, no. I have updated information regarding pets. Go ahead. If you have pets. So they say there is animal care going on for large and small animals at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. That's in addition to the Lakeside Rodeo, which is taking the big animals like horses and stuff. So the Del Mar Fairgrounds, large and small animals, and small animal care at Mira Mesa High School with the Humane Society. The Humane Society is set up there with food and medicine. and whatever your small pet, we're talking cats and dogs and stuff, may need. And then they're also in need of more pet carriers, pet pens, food, litter, whatever you have. If you're able to get a donation to the Humane Society, contact them because they do need some of that stuff right now. CNN.com, their front page developing urgent story is what's happening here in San Diego.
It says helping residents who ignored evacuation orders diverted fire crews away from firefighting efforts Monday as wildfires burned out of control in the San Diego area. There's a quote. We've been unable to do any suppression effort because in most cases the fire resources are being used to do rescues. That is from Bill Metcalf. He's the chief of the North County Fire Protection District in Fallbrook. Metcalf said the wildfire situation in San Diego area has gotten dramatically worse overnight. As the sun rose in Southern California, we're faced with a situation which is worse than many of us could have imagined, Metcalf said. Authorities ordered thousands of Southern Californians to evacuate Sunday and Monday as at least 12 wildfires driven by hurricane-force winds set trees, cars, and buildings on fire. Officials reported at least one death and 17 injuries Sunday.
A long line of vehicles streamed westward out of Ramona, northeast of San Diego, on Monday morning after the mandatory evacuation order as flames of the witch wildfire closed rapidly on the San Diego County community of 10,000 homes in Ramona. So basically, the city of Ramona, shut down. Get out. I mean, that's chilling to come out of my mouth. Yeah, it's like if you go there right now, ghost town. Yeah, they've told you, they've told everybody that lives there to get out. The 2003 Cedar Fire remains fresh in residents' memories. It killed a dozen people south of Ramona four years ago this week, consuming more than 280,000 acres near the town. The Witch Fire was one of several major wildfires to ignite Sunday around L.A. and San Diego, fueled by hot, dry conditions and pushed by fierce Santa Ana winds. The blaze threatened thousands of homes.
Large fires bore down on Malibu, Santa Clarita, and two rural communities east of San Diego early Monday as thousands of firefighters battled the blazes. California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger declared a state of emergency in seven counties. The Witch Fire moved much faster than expected. San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders said that it penetrated San Diego city limits early Monday. He urged San Diegans in the fire's potential path to collect important belongings so that they can evacuate immediately. He said San Diego police would make a reverse 911 call to residents to inform them to leave their homes. The Harris fire straddling Highway 94 east of San Diego caused the death and injuries, including burns, to four firefighters. Starting Sunday morning, the blaze had spread to more than 20,000 acres, and by late Sunday, a spokesman for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection said that it was continuing to spread. It was 5% contained. 13 civilians had burns from the Harris fire, while smaller fires burned late Sunday around L.A. County. Major wildfires threatened the beach community of Malibu and the city of Santa Clarita.
If you don't work for the city, go home. Don't go to work. If you're an employer, let them stay. If you get a phone call from them saying, hey, do I have to come to work? It's not business as usual because whatever business you're in, most people aren't going to use you today. No. They got other things going on. Yeah. We're a little busy. I don't think I'm going to get my oil changed today. Yeah. You know what? I'm going to go ahead and reevaluate that manicure pedicure I had going on later. I'm just going to reevaluate that. Right. You know, I think the places obviously that need to be open are the hospitals and the, you know, stuff like that, the fire department, the police department, and grocery stores, because I'm sure people are going to need to get food. They need emergency workers, big time. Let's see. P1 Lindsay. Go ahead. Hi. I heard a guy call and said that he wanted to know how to get out of Rancho Bernardo, and I live right up on Poway Road, 10 minutes away from Ramona.
We evacuated from there last night into town, and we didn't even sleep in our trailer last night. But the best advice that I can give him is to go through Rancho Bernardo to go towards Lake Poway and Poway High School to get to Scripps Poway Parkway from there and get on to the South 15 and then head towards Qualcomm because that's where we're at right now. Okay. You're at Qualcomm? Yeah, we're at a friend's house right now that live there. We're dropping off all our animals. Yeah, it was bad in Poway. We didn't even sleep all night. We left about 5 o'clock this morning to get here, and traffic, people are driving even worse than they usually do. It's insane. It's a free-for-all in Poway right now, but it's a disaster. All right, thanks. Okay, you're welcome. Appreciate it. P1 Montana. Yeah. Go ahead. Okay, well, I was the volunteer relief director for the Red Cross for the Cleveland National Ortega Fires back in the early 90s. Mm-hmm. Okay, they put me on the front lines, and even though the fire was almost contained, I obtained valley fever. It took about 10 years of my health. I'm not hearing people being told to put wet bandanas over their nose. Little kids can play cowboys or cowgirls and put the wet bandanas over their nose. They should not be outside. If you have to be outside, please wear masks. The smoke has got a lot of...
nasty chemicals and other things that can give people health concerns. Also, the Red Cross down here in San Diego is awesome. And the financial contributions is awesome for them to give. And some of the things that are great for victims are essentials like toothbrush, toothpaste, things that you would not want to be out. And a lot of these people have, like, 70 seconds to leave homes that could be, you know, like in Laguna Beach, they were generational, fifth-generational homes. And they were going up in 70 seconds. No, that's a great point. You know, it seems common sense, but it definitely needs to be mentioned. So people, yeah, if you go outside. Cover up. Put a mask on. Like she said, a wet bandana. Because, yeah, you could have health complications for a long time from breathing in a lot of that smoke. Don't let your kids run around the backyard. Don't let, you know, Spot go out and run on the dog run. No. Keep everybody in. You know, keep everybody safe. P1 Christina. Hey, guys. Hi. Go ahead. I am a Red Cross volunteer. I volunteered actually during the Cedar fires. And I just wanted to let everybody know who wants to volunteer.
Don't get frustrated. It actually takes quite a bit of training to be a Red Cross volunteer. Just keep an eye out for any centers that open. Every once in a while, they'll have a center that'll open and take lists. You will be on a list to volunteer, and they'll put you in a position where you can work based on your experience. But don't get frustrated. You probably won't help for this fire. They want to make sure they send quality people out there. Right now, donations, I think, is the biggest thing that they would need. They're showing a live shot on Channel 7 right now that is chilling. If I were to guess, it looks like it's 8 o'clock at night in the picture that they're showing on television. That's how dark it is. Jennifer, do that. Can you guys keep Jennifer on the line for us, please? Let's listen in. It's Channel 739. Noah Grady's here. Let's see who they're going to be talking to. This is a local official. Let's listen to Sheriff Collender speaking right now. To Sheriff. Noah Grady's here for us. Sheriff Collender, good morning. Thank you very much for joining us on this horrible morning. But give us the very latest from your perspective. Well, the latest is I'm sorry it's not getting better. It's getting worse. As you know, we're unable to control this fire because we can't put the helicopters up to put it out. We're doing the best we can at the rims, but it's just not enough.
It has expanded. We're now covering about 18,000 square miles. It's a very difficult thing, and we don't see an end yet. It'll be at least until tomorrow, maybe tomorrow night when this wind slows down. Sheriff Collender, we've been really getting a lot of images out of Rancho Bernardo as that patch of fire obviously went through there is doing some major destruction. I know many people are concerned. There are so many fires burning in so many sections of the county. Are we anticipating a very similar situation either north of that area or south of that area in the hours or days to come? We are, and we're expecting it throughout this county. There may even be more fires. You're getting all the information on the stats and where the roads are being closed. But what the public must know is that when they are asked to leave, they must leave. They cannot wait. They cannot stay there. They must go. They are not only putting their lives in danger. Like I've said before, your life is more important than your property. But they are also holding up what we're doing because if we have to notify them, a fireman or a law enforcement officer, they're going off their job to do that.
We'll do it once, but that's it. I mean, you've got to do what you're asked to do, and you must prepare. And Sheriff Gollander, any word on resources? Yes. Obviously, we have law enforcement from about well over 200 fire engines and everybody else. Fire people are coming to help us from other parts of our state, other parts of our country. We have not at this point asked for the National Guard. We are looking at that. We have most of the law enforcement agencies in this county, including San Diego and the Border Patrol. They're all helping us. Right now, it's okay. If it gets worse, we may have to ask the governor when he comes here about the National Guard. Why not ask for the National Guard? That surprises me. If not now, when? The experts are telling me that we don't need it right now. And if we do, we will call them. So far, we have enough people to do... Don't you think we're gonna? Yeah. Shouldn't we kind of get ready now?
Or if we need them, we will not hesitate to call them. And Sheriff, go ahead. That's all right. And any word on the air power, on whether or not those airplanes can fly today? We don't think so. We hope so, but we won't know. The wind even picked up last night to 50 miles an hour. There's no way you can fly a helicopter in this. And that's why we really aren't sure how many people have been hurt or killed. and how many structures have been damaged. We just can't get in there to see. What about just the eye in the sky? We're in downtown San Diego right now. I know you're in Kearney Mesa, so you probably have some smoke, but not nearly as much as they have going on north of us. Why not get it up there to see what's coming? Do you have that available? Maybe it's through Astria or another source to see where the fires are and what areas should evacuate next. Well, we can see some of the fires, but very... but not all of them, and we cannot tell exactly where the areas are. We do know where it's going, and it's getting worse east and west. Both fires are just expanding to more fires, and it's really getting terrible. And I just got a cell phone thing. Hold the line here. We'll go ahead and take it. We'll give you a second, by all means. We'll take another shot and let him answer that phone without the mic on, please. And we'll check back with the sheriff here in just a moment. We appreciate the update. 18,000.
Square miles now affected. P1 Carmen, are you there? Yeah, I'm here. Go ahead. They closed down all the campuses of Miracosta Community College. Okay. And I'm pretty sure they closed all the campuses in Oceanside for K-12 in high school because as I was driving back from campus, all the buses were telling the kids to get off. Okay. I appreciate it. Thank you. Okay. Bye. P1 Armin. Hey, Mikey, this is Armeen. Just want to let anybody know that possible ways to get out of Rancho Bernardo would be Bernardo Center Drive, Bernardo Center Road, go west, dumps into Carmel Valley Road. At that point, you can continue west or take a left and go across Black Mountain to get to the 56th. I'm not sure how. We evacuated Carmel Mountain area about 40 minutes ago. 56 was backing up pretty good, as everybody knows. But that's another way out of Rancho Bernardo. All right. Thank you for the call. We got another update. Let me give it to you. This just in. Breaking news. Now with breaking news, we join our sister station, News Radio 600 KOGO. What is that? Why was that there? I have no idea. No idea. Good morning. I'm Delaina Bennett. And here's the latest from AM 600 Kogo.
At least eight fires burning around San Diego County this morning, forcing evacuations. And officials are asking you to stay at home if you're non-essential personnel at your job. They're asking you to clear the freeways and roads for evacuations and also asking you to stay off your cell phone to keep communication clear this morning. If you receive an evacuation order, please leave immediately. The areas of Ramona, Rancho Bernardo, Poway, and Escondido have all been evacuated. In fact, people living north of State Route 56, south of Lake Hodges, and east of Interstate 5 are being asked to leave their homes. And among the communities in this evacuation area are Rancho Santa Fe, Carmel Highlands, Rancho Bernardo, Delmar Heights. Fairbanks Ranch and parts of Rancho Penasquitas and San Marcos. The Witch Fire has penetrated the northeast section of Poway. All residents east of Espola Road from Lake Poway Road through Valley Verde Road have been asked to evacuate. This includes High Valley, Bridalwood Country Estate, Stone Ridge Heritage, Old Coach, and Old Winery neighborhoods. 56 going west, completely filled, not a good evacuation route this morning. There are fires burning in Fallbrook, San Pasquale Valley, where the San Diego Wild Animal Park is being
threatened. The Coronado Hills fire is burning. Over 100 acres burned there. Descanso Valley near Interstate 8 and also Ramona. Over 5,000 acres have burned there. In Petraro, that's the Harris fire burning there and it is burned more than 14,000 acres. Evacuation centers include this morning Escondido High School, Steel Canyon, Santana High School, Westview High and Mount Carmel High in Carmel Valley. Mira Mesa. And because of the number of people who've been ordered to evacuate, Qualcomm Stadium has now been opened. Poway Community Center is open for you. And animals can be taken to the Poway Rodeo Grounds and also to the Lakeside Rodeo Grounds. If you, again, are non-essential to work, please do not go. County is asking you to stay off your cell phone and to not report to work if you are non-essential. I'm Delaina Bennett. For continuing coverage, tune to AM600 COGO. Phone calls, 570-1053. P1 Brandon? Yeah, what's up, Mikey? What's up? Hey, I got a question. What's going on with the airport? Eddie, have you seen anything with the airport? Yeah, I went on to San Diego International.
Their website, the Lindbergh Field website, it is www.san.org. And it looks like all the flights are still going out and coming in. They have a number you can call, too, if you need information, which is 619-400-2400. 619-400-2400. Or go to their website, which is www.san.org. Right on. All right, bro. Thank you, man. So we're giving you the information as soon as we get it. We're going to be on until 10. And at 10 a.m., we're going to switch over to Kogo to let Kogo take over. What we wanted to do this morning is make sure that we were on the air for you. We don't want to screw up your morning any more than it already has. And having us here hopefully is a way for you to kind of connect to what your usual schedule is and what your usual... You know, what you usually do. So we're filling in as soon as we can on information. And throughout the morning, we're also trying to just give you regular information. Regular stuff that we would normally be doing. Try to give you some entertainment stuff. Take your mind off of it for a second. Ash. Did you want to do a traffic update? Yeah, sure. We got him? Yep.
Rick, what's going on on the roads? Well, first of all, I want to thank all the Rock 105.3 listeners. Mikey, man, the phones went crazy when I gave out that tip line and getting all kinds of calls from folks letting me know what was going on because our speed squeeze are down. And, man, we appreciate it. It's great that we can all cooperate and come together on this and give each other what we need. Right now, the westbound, Nate, I've been getting calls. I was just guessing. It's the usual commute stuff. Believe it or not, it is clear. It is clear from El Cajon all the way to the valley. This is very, very odd this morning. But that's okay. We'll take that. On West 94, you've got a full-speed ride over the East County all the way to downtown. Your South Bay rides northbound on the 5 and the 805. They're up to speed as well. Thanks for the calls on the 5 freeway because our Airborne couldn't even see it because the smoke was so bad. They're letting me know that the Southbound 5 is still backed up, though, from the 78 pretty much all the way down to Carmel Valley. The 56 is gridlocked from the 15 west to the 5 freeway. In Rancho Panosquitos and Carmel Valley, you're trying to get on the freeway that way. You mentioned, Mikey, earlier, what was the northbound 5 looking at? It is slow from the 56 up to around the racetrack. But from there, you're full speed all the way up to the north county and the northbound side of the 5. We've got also the 78 freeway westbound. Actually, you're doing okay. A little bit slow through San Marcos coming off the 15. But for a while there, you're picking up speed.
booking until you get to around Vista Village. And then from there, it's backing up to the 5 Freeway here. So once again, I can't thank you guys enough or give us a call on that total traffic tip line. And it's still open. Let me know what's going on here. Rick, I was distracted looking at about a million things when you said that. Right when you started to say the thing that I was really interested in, the 5 North, it is moving or is not moving? Well, it is. As I mentioned, I had a good guess on it when you first asked me about it earlier on today. But it is slow. From the 56 up to around, we're looking at around the Via de la Valle, the other racetrack. But from there, you're full speed all the way up straight into Oceanside and beyond. So the northbound 5, you know, got a brief glitch here. Not too bad compared to everything else going on here. But again, the East County, South Bay rides, they're looking great. So that North County, what a mess that is. And thanks again for the calls. Really appreciate it. Once again, that number is 858-467-0504. Our total traffic tip line here at Rock 105.3. Thanks, man. We appreciate it. And now, it's important what he's saying because he wasn't able to get a lot of the information. Rick Lawrence, our traffic guy, was not able to get a lot of the information he's normally able to get. So it's kind of up to P1s to call that number that he just gave wherever you are, if you know something, and help him out. Because he's not getting that aerial view because there's so much smoke that you can't see the roads, you know? I always think it's important to take a moment.
To realize that you are in a moment. And all of us listening right now and all of us right now, we all are. Right now we are living history. We're in the middle of living a part of history. Because what's happening in San Diego right now is going to be something that will be talked about when my son is graduating from college and beyond. What is happening right now is unbelievable. Precedented in terms of scope. It's big. Yeah. It's a big, big deal. A lot of smoke and dust. They have a wind warning going on right now. In fact, we should let you hear what we're seeing right now. This is probably pretty good information for everybody to know about. We look off in towards the distance. Current conditions across San Diego County right now. We have temperatures mainly in towards the 60s. It's going to be a warm one. Close to 94 degrees. Red flag warnings. Wind warnings. High wind warnings. And plenty of smoke. And gusty conditions, blowing sand as well. Across La Jolla, Oceanside, we have wind advisories. But for the rest of the county, high wind warnings. Winds that could be well over 40 miles an hour. Look for the dew points of dropped. We were watching this very closely. Bill, the dew point we were watching this, I was talking to Bill about it, is dropped to zero in Ramona. Zero. And they can go negative in the winter. It's known to do that in some of the northern climates. But here it is so dry, it is just...
Almost. The next thing we go to is negative numbers after this. So the humidity bottom line is going to be unbelievably on the downside. A humid number would be 60. That's a very humid dew point, 60 or 70. But we are at zero for Ramona. That's how dry it is, and that's the fire that is producing those conditions. And those fires are also known to produce their own weather. The winds are going to be out of the north to northeast. Look at these temperatures for today at the coast. 94 degrees. Poor air quality, lots of smoke, and the high wind warnings. The Santa Ana will last full-blown. Through Tuesday's forecast and slowly diminishing, temperatures mainly in towards the 90s. It's going to be very warm out for today, especially for the firefighters that have to fight this. It'll be extremely hot with the fire and in their suits and the sun and the smoke. It's going to be terrible conditions, and for everybody else, still on the warm side. We'll have to wait until about Wednesday and Thursday when the winds start to move and the high pressure backs down just a little bit more. We're going to be back in the Weather Center checking all the current wind conditions. When I come back, now back over to the news desk and the anchors. Bill Lisa.
We've got another new update. Good morning, I'm Delaina Bennett. Here's the latest from AM600 COGO. At least eight fires burning this morning, forcing evacuations all around San Diego County. And at this point, officials are asking you to stay home to clear roads for evacuations if you are non-essential to your job. Please stay home. All court employees and jurors are asked not to report this morning, and they're asking you to stay off your cell phone to keep communication clear. If you do receive an evacuation order today, please leave immediately. For additional information about resources, please call 211 in San Diego. That's 211 for emergency information. Military personnel and families displaced due to fire evacuations should contact military housing facilities for lodging. Here's what's going on in the areas of Ramona, Rancho Bernardo, Poway, Escondido, including people living in the Cloverdale and Lomas Arenas area. They are all being evacuated. In fact, people living north of State Route 56, south of Lake Hodges, and east of Interstate 5 are being asked to leave their homes at this point. 56 West, completely filled, not a good evacuation route. And the commuter express routes from Poway, Rancho Punasquitas, and Escondido that go down the 15 are closed this morning.
Fires are still burning. Fallbrook, San Pascual Valley, Coronado Hills, Descanso, Ramona, and Petra. The Harris Fire has blackened more than 14,000 acres and is still burning. Evacuation centers that you... may want to go to, if you are being evacuated, Qualcomm Stadium, Escondido High School, Steel Canyon, Santana High, Westview High, Mount Carmel High in Carmel Valley, and Mira Mesa High School. If you have large animals, you are encouraged to go to Lakeside Rodeo Grounds or to the Del Mar Fairgrounds. School closures. Make sure you call ahead because most schools in the county are now closed. I'm Delaina Bennett for continuing coverage. Tune to AM600 COGO. Wow. How do they make it more clear to people to stay home? Yeah, I mean, we should really reiterate what they just said is that, you know, if you are a non-essential to your job, you need to stay home. You need to call your boss or call your worker. It's not essential to this fire for your job. That doesn't mean like, oh, I work at a job where, you know, my computer stuff's really important to the company. Go home. It means important to this fire and in some way contributing to helping.
The fire. If you don't work in that, go home. You hear how bad it is right now on the roads and people trying to get out on the 56 and things like that. Like, you need to not be on the roads right now. It's bad. I can't tell you how irritating it is hearing what that, you know, the lady that called us earlier. The business as usual deal. It is not business as usual. Go home. Period. If you do not work for a city resource that is going to fighting this fire, don't go to work. And if you're already on your way to work, go home. Clear the roads. And if you're hearing that right now and you're like, oh, Mikey, you don't understand. I have this document due today that I just said, go home. This is bigger than your document.
Yeah. This is bigger than all that stuff that you think that you need to have handed in and blah, blah, blah. And I can just, I picture, you know, this is one of those situations where I picture the bosses being like, I know what they're saying. You need to get that here, blah, blah, blah. Okay, monster head. Have them stay home. Have your employees stay home. It's just, today is a day where we have to do that. I mean, most schools are closed as well, so don't be bringing your kids to school this morning. It's not necessary. If they already are at school, you may want to call and make sure you are able to go pick them up because they're closing most schools. P1 Shannon's got some good information. Shannon, go ahead. Hi. I work for a pediatric office in Infinitas. I work for Radies Children's, and I know our office is closed, even though we are a medical facility.
And I know we're telling our patients that if you have children with asthma or respiratory problems, to make sure you keep them inside, you know, air conditioners on, close your windows, have your inhalers in hand. Great stuff. So, and, you know, if there are emergencies, you know, call the office, you know, and go through our service, and they're going to call the doctors on call so that we can kind of still keep in contact with our patients, but unfortunately we're not going to be able to see them in the office. And I know there's other offices that are closing as well. All right. Well, I really appreciate that information, Shannon. That's great stuff. Thank you. Thank you. Not a problem. Now, in terms of everybody else, we would love to get your phone calls, especially if you have information. It's tough if you have a question because we may not have the answer. We're trying to give you every bit of information that we have. But if you're calling with a question like, hey, Mikey, where am I supposed to go if blah, blah, blah?
We may have a listener that can help with that. We may. But what's more important is that we get information. So if people are listening and you've got good information, we'd love to hear from you. If you are hearing the message, this is something worth repeating because Mayor Sanders said this this morning. Mayor Sanders was talking about if you have been told to evacuate, This is not a suggestion. Right. Get out. And the reason that you need to get out is because right now resources that would normally go to fighting this fire are being used to rescue dumbos that say, I'm going to stick it out. Yeah, I'll be fine. You're potentially putting a lot of people's lives at risk because you want to stay.
Including those firefighters. Yeah. You're not going to stop the fire with your garden hose. No. So just get out. And, you know, just get out. Just get out. If they tell you to evacuate, evacuate. Don't take up those resources. Right now, it's too valuable. Boy, I hope that that wind can slow down a little bit. Yeah. I really hope that wind can slow down a little bit so that they can get those helicopters up and so that it doesn't keep spreading. You know what I think would be interesting? Sean is up in the Bay Area. You know, our sound effects guy is in the Bay Area. He connects with us via satellite every day to come on the air. And I'm just curious, in the Bay Area, Sean, is this making big news? I mean, on television and stuff like that? Or is it kind of localized to us?
It's really interesting. We have a couple of radio stations here that are kind of like Kogo, and it's actually all they're talking about this morning. Really? They're obviously not doing, you know, like commercial-free blocks or anything like that. But it's not only is it the top story, it's really the only story that they're dealing with this morning. Wow. Yeah. And that's on the Bay Area's, you know, radio and TV. So even up there, it's a big deal what's happening down here. This is interesting. I see that I have a call that says he has another way to get out of the gridlock on the 56. I hasten to take it. Yeah. And the reason that I do is because what if we send somebody potentially somewhere where it's dangerous? Yeah. You know? Don't want to do that. So, did you hear what I just said, Rob? So, I just want to be careful of that. I don't want to send anybody in harm's way. P1 Chelsea? Yes. Go ahead.
I was just going to say that I know a lot of people commute up to Orange County, and there is also a fire going on outside of Irvine. So if anyone commutes to Irvine or anywhere in Orange County, to be aware of that as well. Okay. I appreciate it. All right. Thanks. Thanks. We have you as up-to-date as we can, but as soon as I get information, I pass it on. So as soon as it happens, I give it to you. We're commercial-free right now. We're not running commercials. The fire obviously taking precedent over Kid Rock getting into a fight at a Waffle House yesterday. But it was at a Waffle House. I know. I mean, you'd think that the fact that it was at a Waffle House would make it so important that people would be talking about it more. I'm sure people want to know what he ordered. True. But it's going to have to wait. Sorry. And it happened in the parking lot, right? Yeah. They got into the parking lot, and I understood it was like, The Jets and the what do you call it? The Sharks? The Jets and the Sharks. I heard that they brawled like the Michael Jackson beat it video. And he goes in jail for 12 hours and they let him go. Roseanne Barr recently compared Britney Spears to a crack whore. That's how you really feel. She did this crazy blog like Mikey says where she compares Britney to a crack whore and then goes on to start attacking Britney's mom for quote pimping her out like
John Bonet. Whoa. Yeah. Mean. So, yeah, you probably shouldn't. There you go, Roseanne. Yeah, great. Well, we hadn't heard from you for a while. Yeah, so we all talked about you this morning. Hope you're happy. Do you guys know that Ellen gave another dog away a few years ago? Oh, no. Maybe it's her fetish. Yeah, she loves it. It's her thing. Yeah, she likes to get dogs and just give them away. Cool. Yeah, well, this woman is claiming that about two years ago she gave Ellen a dog and that just in less than two months, Ellen gave that dog away to one of her staff members. She called to check on the dog. Ellen didn't have the dog anymore and said, oh, yeah, I gave her away. So obviously she's taken this opportunity with everything that's going on with Ellen to, you know, get her name out there. Eddie, did you hear that? All schools in San Diego County were closed? Most schools are. Okay. But I'm sure it'll probably be all very soon. P1, Nicole, what do you know? Hi, I just dropped my kids off at McAuliffe Elementary. Where's that? Yeah, where is McAuliffe Elementary? Oceanside. Oceanside. Gotcha, gotcha, okay. And I heard one of your callers say that all Oceanside schools were closed, and I happened to see the principal on the walkway.
you know, the hallway. And I asked her and she said no. And she just spoke to the superintendent of Oceanside and all their schools are open. That's interesting. Yeah, but there are some teachers that aren't there. Like my son's kindergarten teacher isn't there because she was evacuated. I think Sky's right. It's not going to take long before the city of Oceanside goes, oh yeah, we have a brain. Let's not have anybody come to work today. Right, and you can't even smell the smoke here. That's what is weird. It's going to take their teachers not showing up this class to teach the class for them to be like, okay, no school. Like, hello. Yeah, I get they want to keep the schools open as long as they can, but if the city is saying, hey, any non-essential personnel, you know, that includes teachers and principals and cafeteria workers, you know, stay, stay, stay off the road. The time to keep schools open as long as you can has come and gone. Yeah. Right, right. Please. Thank you for the call. And what will our curriculum be today? Who's going to make the mystery meat? That's right. What was that, actually? It's a mystery. I know, but the mystery has to be broken. No. I don't think it ever can be. Even Geraldo tried to open that Pandora's box. I heard he got hit in the face with a big patty when he tried to open up the... Couldn't identify it. He couldn't identify the mystery meat.
Well, I'm Geraldo Rivera, and we are moments away from finding out what mystery meat is. Did you guys ever watch that thing when he broke into... I watched it with my parents, live. Al Capone's. Al Capone's. Yeah, I watched it. Yeah. Maybe the most disappointing thing I've ever seen. There was nothing in there. It was empty. What was in there? Was nothing in there? There was a little bit of paperwork and... Paperwork? Like, random stuff. Like, nothing cool. And what was his deal? What did he think was going to be in there? Treasure. Cash. Yeah, like all this crazy stuff. That'd have been cool. Would have been awesome. Well, would have been what we thought it would be. Well, yeah. It wasn't what we thought it wasn't. Yeah. You know what I'm saying? Rob, very funny call on line five, not the time. Oh, what is this? Oh, come on. Not yet, not yet. It's not time yet.
Just let P1 Instigator know. Oh, great. Come on. Just let him know. Dude. I appreciate his sense of humor. Oh, my gosh. Rob. Not quite time yet. Yeah. First time Instigator calls in like a year. I know it. Yeah. I haven't heard from the guy in a year. That's brutal. Let's see. P1 Leia? Yes. Go ahead. I just wanted to let everyone know that the rodeo grounds on Camp Pendleton are open for any of the livestock that need a place to go because of the Delmar being so backed up. Now, where are you getting that information from? I've actually called and spoken to the base and to the base stables, and they have said it is a definite go-ahead. Okay. So there you go. Camp Pendleton rodeo grounds and lakeside rodeo grounds. The Delmar Fairgrounds. Open to large animals.
Back in the day when I still lived in an apartment, I had a couple of horses in the place, and it was so crowded in there. Where? In your apartment? In the apartment. It was so crowded in there with me and the horses, and it would have been a great opportunity to take them. What are you talking about? You're being real weird right now. I'm just saying, you know. Just load them in the Tacoma and take off? I didn't have anything that big at the time of Celica. Oh, well. So they had to sit in the back seat. In their horse seat? They had to sit in their horse seat, which... In the Celica. In the Celica, which I'd had to prove for them. Yeah. Is it a white Celica? It was a white Celica. Not after the horses were there. Oh, no. Hey. So funny, I can still remember looking in the back seat and seeing those horses sitting in their little safety chairs with their harnesses. You're being weird. Their chair's just filling up with... Horse. Horse hair. Yeah, horse hair. Horse stuff. Back in reality, we actually, when there were the Santa Cruz fires up in the Bay Area, we had friends who lived up there who had animals and came to evacuate, and they had to fill their cars with their pigs and their goats and their chickens and the whole thing. And, dude, those pigs rocked.
their car and like they literally after the fires were over took their car to one of those like you put the quarter in and you wash your car and just opened up all the doors to the car and just spraying out the inside you know and that's what people have to do you just you know you got to throw everything you love in a car it's really weird how pigs are pigs pigs are just pigs you filthy I say the name you filthy pig well that's not okay this looks like a pigsty Yeah, that's where they get the saying. Oh, quit eating like that, you pig. Stop already. Already with the slop, you pig. Hey, man. Maybe a something. I'll give you the update as soon as I get it. Pig jokes. Levity. Just trying to give a little levity. Look into it, Skye. I don't know what that means. It's good for you. Today's Skye's birthday. Happy birthday.
And I woke up this morning and I walked outside. I smelled all the smoke. I'm like, I get it. It's your birthday. Sending smoke signals everywhere. I mean, geez. It's my birthday. Hello. Guess what day it is. Hello. Toast me. Toast me. I guess my dinner plans at the Outback in Poway are probably not. No toast? Not so much. Not so much. Reservations, are you still open? Oh, no. Brigantine. I wanted to go to the Outback in Poway. Fire, Squire. What? I'll be there at five. Well, then reopen. Oh, perhaps I didn't mention who this is. All right. S-K-Y, hello. Hey. P-1 Stacy, go ahead. Hey, I work at a supermarket, and I just got off work, and a fellow employee told me, you know, even though I live out of the fire area, that it's important to stock up on canned goods and water because the electricity is going out everywhere. Oh, no. I didn't even think of that. Yeah, I didn't either. I didn't even think of that. That's a good idea. Be important for all your callers. Also, the gas lines are backed up everywhere because we're just west of the fire. Thank you very much. All right. You're welcome.
We're telling you updates at the top and the bottom of the hour. As we get them, we give them to you. No new updates yet, though, right, Ash? Not yet. We're waiting. No, but we're about to do traffic in about one minute. Okay, cool. And we did have a P1 write in to say that his classes at Miramar City College have been canceled, and there was a posting on their website reflecting that they will be canceling all their classes today. And then I did get an update from a P1 out in Escondido. Now keep in mind this is information from a P1, but they say that San Pasquale and the Wild Animal Park have been told to evacuate. People working in Escondido have been told to leave work, according to the P1. So we'll check into that and get you the latest on that as well. Rick Lawrence standing by. Yeah, Mikey. You have an update on the traffic conditions. Yeah, and continue what Sky was just saying. I don't know if she may have mentioned this earlier, but they're really urging people in Poway, especially if you're living right around the Espolar Road area and going westbound, they really want you to get out of there. Just get over to the 5, I mean the 15 rather. That's open southbound to you, and you can do that. Right now, Pomerado Road is looking like a good access here to get out of the Poway area. It's not too bad right now. So if you want to access that and get out of Poway,
That's a good way to go there as well. But they're really urging folks in Poway as this fire moves from pretty much closing in on this Boulder Road here to get out of the way. The 15 freeway is still shut down in both directions here from the 78 to the 56. However, as I mentioned, South 15 is open to residents to get out of Poway and Rancho Bernardo. The 78 itself westbound, heading out of Escondido. You know what? You're looking okay. You're going to find a nice, easy ride until you get around Vista Village. From there, it jams up to the 5 freeway. Once you get on that Southbound 5, you're actually Good to go for a little bit out of Oceanside, but just back up now from Palomar Airport Road down all the way to the racetrack and beyond here to Carmel Valley on that side. The westbound 56 has been a mess. There's a lot of people heading north from the 15, had nowhere to go. They got put on the westbound 56, and then you've got the evacuees coming out of Verachepenisquitos and Carmel Valley trying to get out of there. A good way to go, right? Don't go on the westbound 56. Get on the eastbound 56. That's clear all the way to the 15. Then take the south 15 from there. That's a much better way to go. go and trying to head to the coast right now for you. And some good news out of the East County and the South Bay at 894-5805 North out of the South Bay. These freeways are completely clear in both directions. So that's good news here for you. And again, just be safe, be careful, and just do what the authorities tell you to do. Don't try to cross any lines that are closed down here because that's where you get into trouble. I'm Rick Lawrence, Rucker 053 Traffic. Thank you, Rick. This reminds me so much of staying on the air during 9-11, Eddie. Yeah. When we stopped running commercials and
Yeah, this is a local emergency. Big time. For sure. And, you know, if you lived in Ramona and were evacuated, obviously Ramona, Poway, those school districts are closed. Oh, yeah. For sure. And then most other schools are closed. Just call and check. You know, I'm sure they're being bombarded. Be patient and find out no reason to bring your kids to school if they don't need to be there. Yeah. Let's see. Let's take some phone calls. P1 Max, are you there? Max? Yeah, Mikey? Yeah, go ahead. You're on the air. Hey, good. I just want to let you know that I think the best advice you've given all day is if you're working in San Diego, if you're commuting into it, just do not go. I just commuted from Oceanside all the way down to, I guess, about Via Del Valle. I work on the naval base there. And a lot of us are kind of, I don't know if they're listening to you or not, but a lot of us are turning around there at that intersection because we can't even see about 50 feet in front of us. It's totally black smoke from Oceanside.
all the way down to that Villadale via exit. There's just ash falling everywhere. And I hope more people listen because it's a gridlock parking lot on both sides on the five going north and south. Okay. I appreciate it. I just want to say thanks. Just to let you know what's going on. I appreciate it, man. All right. Any other information, guys, or are we up to date on everything? We can always check with the Kogo feed whenever you want. If you want to get some information. It seems like it's more of the same, but they definitely have it all official there over at COGO. Fire continued. One of the strange things that Mark noted earlier about this is the winds did not abate overnight. If anything, they intensified, and we found ourselves again with a fire that is, there's no other way to say it, it's out of control. As the proverbial wind blows, our fate is determined here, and that's what we're waiting on. The best you can do is to be smart. Be prudent. Have your things ready. If you get a call, go. If you see flames or if you get a call from a friend that's down the road that's evacuating. It's that kind of network right now. Yeah, if you hear road closures, it doesn't mean... All right, I'll keep going to that if we need it. Let's see. P1 Daniel, are you there? Yes. What's up, brother? I was calling actually in regards to the lady that just phoned in about the rodeo grounds here on Camp Pendleton. Uh-huh.
I'm actually a Marine station here on Camp Pendleton, and I just talked to the gentleman over at the rodeo grounds, and he says starting at 9 o'clock, they're going to open up for everything from small animals, such as like cats, dogs, anything like that, up to everything from horses to anything that you have that is livestock that you need a home for. Okay. That's great. I mean, I actually personally have animals here, and we've opened up our stalls for people that live anywhere from Southern California up to Temecula that might possibly have animals that need homes for right now. Okay. Sounds good. I appreciate it. Thanks for the call. 570-1053. Now, we're not leaving the air to take any commercial breaks or anything like that. And so if I pause for a minute, it's only because I'm trying to collect data as we're on the air. Skye, do you have a list of school closings that you can just kind of read off of any that you do have? Yeah, I do. I mean, there's like we've been saying, I mean, the list just keeps growing by the moment. But we have Vista Unified, Valley Center, Puma, Palma, I'm sorry, Unified, Spencer Valley Schools District, San Pasquale Union.
Our new list says Palomar College. We mentioned earlier Cal State San Marcos College, Escondido Elementary, Escondido Union High School, Escondido Charter High, Steel Canyon High, Helix Charter, Grossmont School District, San Diego Hebrew Day School in Kearney Mesa, Palomar Mountain Elementary School, Valley Center, Mountain Empire, Julian. They say... Not because of the fire, but so many people who have been, I guess, evacuated, affected that. Yeah, just all over the place. P1 Jason. How's it going, Mikey? Good, man. Go ahead. South Bay School District is still staying open. I called the superintendent, and they're getting bombarded with calls, but their decision is to stay open until they're told otherwise. Hundreds of kids going to school down here. And I just passed my son's school. I'm keeping him out. There's kids walking with rags over their face and masks on, and the parents are just dropping them off. No big deal. I think it's ridiculous. You should call that superintendent back and let him know that that's what you're seeing. It's just not... You told him that you're seeing kids walking around breathing that crap in? They wouldn't let me get a hold of the superintendent. The secretary won't let them because obviously they're all in meetings right now. But I tried to call two or three times, and they won't talk to the people.
But I keep leaving messages and my number to call me back. And I called the school and told them my son's not coming in. They said, why not? I said, look outside. Right. Why not? Oh, my gosh. Maybe they didn't have a nose. Yeah, we're taking a beach day. Yeah. That's what I'm thinking. Exactly. What the heck? Yeah, I thought I'd take him to play tennis. Right. I mean, you're sitting there on the radio saying the adults stay home and the adults are going back to work. And, you know, who cares about the kids? Hey, thank you. I appreciate it, man. Thanks, Buck. They're showing people doing reports right now. And the people that work for the television stations that are doing reports have masks on and goggles. It's unbelievable. Yeah, they're in an RV and it's so thick out there. It's crazy. They head to shelters as well. Dan and Nichelle. Rick, we are seeing a lot of smoke, that thick white smoke in that area of Rancho Bernardo and that specific street that you are on. And I'm just wondering if you could give us some more perspective on what you are seeing in the way of...
Fire, flames, anything along those lines, or homes that maybe are on fire, because we are reporting and have seen homes on fire in other parts of Rancho Bernardo. Yeah, we've heard reports of that, too. There are homes on fire. There are roofs on fire. When we were back over there near Moonsong Court, actually, we had seen a lot of fire coming really close to the backyards of homes. Apparently, where we went, firefighters doing a really great job of just keeping it away from the structures, not even trying to put it out. We had also noted, I don't know if you saw the video, but we had seen that these people had done that 100-foot defensible space. So they had taken the time to do that, and I think it's really going to end up saving their homes in the long run. It just makes it easy for firefighters. Again, they haven't been sleeping because the fire has been raging, and these winds are so heavy and pushing this fire in every which direction. So it's been really rough with them. But, yes, there are homes that have been caught on fire, and we were out there, and firefighters are doing everything they can to save these homes. Yeah, it is just a nightmare for the homeowners there in that location. Rake, I do want to ask you, does it seem like most people have left that area, or are a few still staying behind?
Well, we thought most people had left this area. In fact, when we came into the neighborhood, we just saw empty cars parked, no activity whatsoever, except for police driving up and down the streets, kind of letting people know to get out if they haven't. But at the last minute, we saw kind of patches of neighbors getting out of these homes. You still see cars driving out of here. Again, they received the reverse 911 call. Just a few minutes ago, they say. So the people who are packed and ready to go from last night were able to jump into their cars. But if this is the first that they were hearing it, they did have to take some time to get their important documents and any things that they wanted to keep and get out of here. A lot of people don't know where exactly to go. They're having a lot of trouble finding shelters or getting in touch with family members to see who they can stay with. So that's been another problem. But for right now, police and fire crews are just asking. people to get out of their neighborhoods and get away from the fire. Rekha, it seems like that wind is really whipping you around. And I don't know if you have any kind of wind gauges or instruments to tell us, but it seems like the wind has been so sporadic. And Julian, we were saying the wind speed was in the 50s, 50 mile per hour range. I don't know if you can tell, but are you having difficulty standing up? Are you getting blown around? Yeah, we can see from the trees and the limbs there also. What's that like?
Yeah, you can see the trees and the wind. They're blowing the wind this way. But what's really interesting is any which way you drive, it seems that the wind is taking on a different direction. It's very unpredictable. The wind actually just in the last few minutes has picked up and is kind of blowing us around. Last night, I feel like it felt a little worse. We were getting blown around a little more. Right now, like I said, I believe the houses are kind of help keep that wind back from where we're standing. But it still is pretty rough out here. And when you get closer to the canyons on the other side of these homes, the wind is just absolutely awful and pushing that fire towards the homes. I know, Dad, that wind is really kicking up a lot of dust and dirt everywhere. How are breathing conditions? Because I do notice you wearing your mask. Is your photographer? And I noticed producer David Godforson also out there with you. Are they okay? The smoke is just so thick. We haven't really been able to take our masks off. There's embers flying around everywhere when you get closer to the canyons and stuff. And again, it's just that wind picks it up and it makes it so difficult to breathe out here. We saw neighbors packing up their cars and I was just surprised that they had nothing covering their faces because it is really hard to breathe out here. You know, the lack of oxygen and just having to run around with the smoke. What's amazing looking at the pictures is...
How windy it still is. Yeah, that wind is not dying down, and that's what we need. Can we get a legal here? Broadcasting from the Cricket Wireless Studios. Go see Sandy H. Go ahead, Ashley. And just want to let you know that we will have a fresh, brand-new COCO update like any second now. Okay, cool. And I did just receive an email from a P1 saying that according to the UCSD website, they will not be having classes today, UCSD. I just, I can't believe that everybody's not shutting it down. Grossmont College is open as of right now, so hopefully that will change very soon. Keep checking in before you go to classes and things like that. Hey, Mikey, P1 Andy. I work for Washington Mutual and Vista, and I just wanted to let some of our customers know that the branch in San Marcos by Cal State San Marcos has been closed. The branch in Del Mar is closed. I just want to get the word out to some of the customers, if they're listening, to not go to those branches because they're closed. It would be great.
It would be great if our customers were aware. Yeah, that's the thing. I mean, I know everybody that money is a big deal to all of us. The bank should be closed today. Everything should be closed today, just about. Unless you work for the city or the fire department or whatever. They're telling you, if you don't work for a city, any kind of city thing that's going to help fight these fires, go home. Don't go to work. It's not the time. The resources are kind of drained as it is. Look at that wind. So bad. Yeah, the wind is what's killing it, man. The wind is just so crazy. P1 Adeline. Hi. Hi. Hi. I just wanted to get the word out to all the fire victims out there that Craigslist is just a huge resource.
to get help i was in the free section and the community section and there's just tons of people just offering their homes for people offering to take in animals if they need a place to keep them while they're finding shelter there's just people offering their trucks to help evacuees i mean there's just a huge outpouring on craigslist so a lot of people probably don't have access to computers right now so if you know you can get to If you can get to a computer, it'd be great to just find help from anyone who's willing to give it. I mean, San Diegans have a huge heart, so that'd be great to know. Thank you. We appreciate it, Adeline. You're welcome. So I told you that we wanted it. We want to keep you updated as we can, you know, give you the latest on everything that's going on, and we will. A couple more school closures. UCSD. We already said that, right? ITT Mira Mesa, St. Charles Catholic School, Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Dingman Elementary, Scripps Ranch. So just letting you know a few more as they come through. We're all keeping our phones on, so if you hear phones in the background, we're keeping them on because we got family, maybe affected, so we want to make sure that our loved ones are able to get a hold of us. Let's see. Rob Baronis, Tennessee Titans. Guy kicked eight field goals yesterday.
You probably would have been pretty good to have on your fantasy football team. Do you know that in our league, no one has them? Wow. Whoa. That's crazy. Eight field goals. Unbelievable. And Chicago beat Philly? Yeah, on their last drive, final drive, just absolutely stunned Philly. Philly was leading the whole game, and Chicago put together a drive at the end of the game, won the game. And college moves up to number two in the country? Just the craziest football season there is, man. I mean, every team has been upset. You know, all the major players have been upset. Last week it was South Florida who was number two. Now BC, who didn't even play this week, has moved up to number two. Really? It's just weird. That's it. That is, man. You know. Let's see. P1 Dave, are you there? Yeah. Go ahead. I'll just let anybody know that anybody with a water truck, the U.S. Forestry Department, is in desperate need for anybody... the water truck, and they will pay up to $300 an hour for people to be on standby. Now, where did you get this information? What's that? Where did you get this information? My boss had actually called the forestry department to see if they needed any help. He was informed, and he just sent me down to National City to go pick up our water truck. Okay. I'm heading up there to drop it off right now. Okay, sounds good. Okay. Thank you. Thank you. Let's see.
The Malibu fire is going on, too. And a whole bunch of celebrities, man, were affected by that. Have we got an update on Mel Brooks yet? Yes. What's Mel Brooks doing? Well, like I told you guys before, Mel Brooks lives in the neighborhood here. Well, they don't specifically say if he's okay. People want to know this guy. They do say that director James Cameron and singer-actress Olivia Newton-John definitely were evacuated. Oh, good. There might be an abyss, too. But like I said earlier, some of the other neighbors in that area of Malibu are Jennifer Aniston, Sting, Bill Murray, Mel Brooks, Howie Mandel, Britney Spears, Tom Hanks. Howie Mandel's running around with a little rubber glove over his head. I don't think he's doing that. You do not believe that he is? No. That's what I heard. He's doing that? We have a...
We have a new update here. Good morning. I'm Delaina Bennett. Here's the latest from AM600 COGO. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has declared a state of emergency here in San Diego County. The mayor is calling on anyone who does not have to report to work to stay at home. Again, non-essential employees, please stay at home. More than 40,000 acres have been scorched throughout Southern California. One person killed, 17 injured. Officials are asking you to stay off your cell phone as well to try to keep communication clear. And if you do receive an evacuation order, please leave immediately. All court employees and jurors asked not to report this morning. And if you need additional information about resources... please call 211 in San Diego. The areas of Ramona, Rancho Bernardo, Poway, Escondido, and people living north of State Route 56, south of Lake Hodges, and east of Interstate 5 are being asked to leave their homes. Among the communities affected in that particular evacuation area are Rancho Santa Fe, Carmel Highlands, Rancho Bernardo, Delmar Heights, Fairbanks Ranch, and parts of Rancho Penasquitos.
and San Marcos and Poway also affected. 56 going west is completely filled. They're asking you not to take that route if you are evacuating. And there are fires burning in other parts of the county. Fallbrook, San Pasqual Valley, Coronado Hills, Descanso near Interstate 8, Ramona, where 5,000 acres have burned, and Petrero, over 14,000 acres burned. Evacuation centers this morning, if you are evacuating, please use Qualcomm Stadium if you possibly can. Dito High School is available, Steel Canyon, Santana High School, Westview High, Mount Carmel High and Carmel Valley, Mira Mesa High, and now the Del Mar Fairgrounds is being opened as an evacuation center. You can also take your animals to the Del Mar Fairgrounds or to the Lakeside Rodeo Grounds. As far as school closures, the majority of schools in San Diego County are now closed. Palomar College, Hamul Schools, Oak Grove Unified, Greater San Diego Academy, Ramona Unified, Poway Unified, Julian, Mountain Empire, Dehesa, Palomar Mountain Elementary, the high schools in Escondido, Escondido Unified.
Steel Canyon High, Helix Charter, Grossmont School District, San Pasqual Union School District, Valley Center, Palma Unified, Vista Unified, San DeGuito School District, La Mesa Spring Valley Unified School District, Lakeside Union School District, Del Mar Union, Solana Beach, Scripps Ranch High, and Mira Mesa High. Please call ahead before you go anywhere, but most schools are closed today. Also, as far as hospitals go, Scripps Clinic and Urgent Care is now closed. Palmarado Hospital is closed as it is being evacuated. For continuing coverage, tune to AM600 COGO. The live shots are unbelievable. They're unbelievable. Oh, I want to hear about this from the American Lung Association. So that the best sort of quality is... Other people who suffer from asthma and other conditions. Ross, good morning. Good morning. What advice do you have on the outright to give to people who suffer from any of these conditions that I mentioned, including bronchitis and emphysema? Basically, the advice is to slow down and stay indoors, minimize activity, run the air conditioner on a recirculation setting so that the best sort of air quality is possible. Be in a place where you can get recirculated air.
You know, a Denny's or a movie or something like that. I don't know that the movie theaters are going to be open for business today. Probably not. How would you have recirculated air at your house? Is that possible for people to do that? Well, they said the air conditioner. That's recirculating all the air in your house? Yeah. Everybody needs to know that less activity is better in bad air quality circumstances like this. And watch for symptoms like wheezing, dizziness, shortness of breath. Those are signs that you might need to call your doctor. But in general, it's good to stay on your medication and do your monitoring of your breath. And it's not only people with lung conditions who are affected by bad air quality days. It's also people who have heart disease. So go down, take it easy, drink a lot of water. Ross, obviously if you're in the area where there is no visibility because the smoke is that thick, it clearly is a tremendous life risk. What is in the smoke, and for people that are on the periphery, those of us downtown, people along the beach, people in Del Mar areas that haven't actually had any fire yet, what are the risks of the smoke? Yeah, it really is quite different if you're close to the fire or the evacuation situation.
in a much different risk pattern than people who, like us downtown, who are on the outskirts and just suffering with the general smoke and unpleasantness. On the outskirts, on the unpleasantness part, what you're talking about are the smoky smell, and that is an indicator that the air quality is at least unhealthy, and the danger there is in the small particles. The stuff that you smell really isn't the worst. It's the smaller particles than that. The pollution danger is really measured by the size of the particle as well as what's in it. So we'll take you back to that if we need to. Ash, what do you got? I've got an exclusive text message from Zeth who said that Kearney Villa Road at Arrow going east is closed. Arrow. Thanks, Zed. I wonder why. Strange. That is strange. Has nothing to do with the fire. He just wanted to let people know. Construction. P1 Eric is on the line. He works for an AC company. Work for an AC company, Eric? What's that? You work for an AC company? Yes, sir. Go ahead, man. Yeah, I was just telling everybody, on your thermostat, you can turn your fan mode to on. You don't have to run the AC, just turn the fan mode on. And if you've got clean filters...
Just put a new filter in and you can double it up if you want as long as the air is moving through it good. There you go. Appreciate it, man. Thank you. Hey, Mike, you want to let you know that all boys and girls clubs of greater San Diego closed today. Could you please let your listeners know? Thank you. That's good. Sure. We'll do that. Let's see. What can I give you from the real world that will maybe put a smile on your face? Stephen Colbert explains why he's opposed to gay marriage. Cut 16. Gay marriage. Yeah. The biggest threat, you say, facing America today, next the socialized medicine, the Dyson vacuum cleaner, and the recumbent bicycle. Yeah. To you, that means it's a serious threat to our culture. Right. Why? Excuse me? Why? Why is gay marriage? Marriage is the basic building block of society. And if gay men get married...
That threatens my marriage immediately because I only got married as a taunt toward gay men because they couldn't. So it makes you feel insecure. Well, I just don't know why I got married other than to rub it in gay people's faces. Okay. Wasn't expecting that. I don't think the guy on Meet the Press was either. Because that's where that came from. Oh, good. Meet the Press. Oops. I just want to rub it in people's faces, he says. Did you guys see Lance Bass on 2020? Oh, no. Missed that. Cut nine. You begin your book with this. I've known I was different ever since I was five years old. I knew it was wrong. At least that's what I was taught by my family, my church, my friends, my whole world. Since you were five? Oh, yeah. As long as I remember, I knew that I was gay. And I knew my whole life I'd probably have to act a different way. Cut 10. Boys were schooled on how to be pop stars. You're told from the very beginning of the band, you know, so many weird things like you can't have a girlfriend. If you have a girlfriend, do not get pictures taken with them. You cannot have a drink in your hand. Do not be seen smoking a cigarette. Like there's so many rules to being, you know, a young pop star.
Did you fear that if you were honest about your sexuality, that that would harm not only you, but the band? It was never told to me, and you can't be gay. No one ever said that, but if you can't have a beer in your hand, if that's going to make thousands of girls not buy your album, then being gay definitely is going to make girls not buy your album. Yeah, girls don't want to be all India if they think you like their brothers. What? Really? It's just the way it is. P1, Katie. Hi, good morning, Mikey. Morning. I was calling, I'm going to try to make this quick because I don't want to tie up your lines, but I'm headed back into Fallbrook trying to pick up my son at the school. They are closing William H. Frazier School and transferring the kids to May Ellis. But I did speak to a firefighter who is on the ground. They're actually lining up the 15 freeway. The fire is getting ready to come over the mountain across the 15 freeway at the Fallbrook Mission off-ramp.
There are people lined up just kind of looky-loos and not allowing the fire crews to get people evacuated out of Rainbow and where they need to go. They're putting up barriers against the freeway to try to keep people from getting on the South 15 from the Fallbrook exit. And people are actually going around the barriers. Yeah, it's not Disneyland. People need to know it's not Disneyland. It's not a tourist attraction, folks. You're making it worse, people. They're asking everybody to clear that roadway around Rainbow Valley Boulevard and the mission off-ramp. All right. Common sense. Thank you. I appreciate it. Skye, what do you got? We got an update regarding the Wild Animal Park for the San Pasquale fire that's burning out there in eastern Escondido. They say the San Diego Wild Animal Park has been closed, of course, to visitors and staff. The flames are threatening the eastern end of the park. I guess being proactive, yesterday they took smaller animals, including California condors. They moved those to the park's hospital. And then they say that all the other animals are being kept in a large field enclosure. And they consider that safer because the vegetation is kind of sparse around there. But it doesn't really look like they can evacuate all those animals. So they're just keeping them there and fingers crossed at this point. They're going to start eating each other.
Well, I don't know. Well, you put lions in with zebras. Well, I'm sure they know not to mix certain animals. You just said they put all animals in the field. Well, I'm sure they know what they're doing, Eddie. Okay. They're the professionals. Eddie realized that during emergency times, those animals know to get along. Oh. I didn't even consider that. A lion is not going to eat a zebra if there's stuff happening. They're smoking it. It's kind of like Noah's Ark. It's the Noah rule. Yeah, the Noah rule goes into effect when there's an emergency situation where you get a lion next to a gazelle and the gazelle's like, look, please. And the lion goes, I get it, I get it, I get it. Noah rule. Noah rule. And he goes, you want to know something though, bro? As soon as they say it's okay, your A is mine. But right now? Respect. Yeah, and they hoof. They bump hoof. They bump hooves. Because of the Noah rule. That's right. I had my first rhino when I moved into a duplex for the first time. What are you talking about? And similar situation, I had to evacuate. And at the time, I drove a Chevy Nova. And trying to get a rhino into the trunk of a Chevy Nova because you've already got a horse in the back seat in this horse chair.
Look in that horn and it's kind of like, you know. That's the toughest part. I had to use one of those bungees to hold the trunk closed. You got to put like the red flag on the end of this horn. Yeah, did you do that? Because you get in trouble if you don't do that. Well, I got pulled over and I said to the officer, I know, I know. And he goes, no, I just want to let you know one of your brake lights is out. Oh, wow. Lucky you. I was really surprised. I thought it was about the animals. The rhino. The rhino's sticking out of my trunk. And the horse in the backseat. He said, do you realize you have expired registration? Two horses. Oh, two in the backseat, my bad. I said, no, officer. Really? I have expired registration? And he goes, yeah. You want to come look at it with me? So I said, yeah, I do, actually. So we both got out of the car. He moved the rhino's gigantic hoof out of the way. And I clearly saw that he was right. Ashley. We're going to do a traffic report update here. Rick Lawrence is standing by with a traffic report. Go ahead, Rick. Well, things haven't really changed much, except for the traffic, of course. The East County has been great here this morning, and the South Bay traffic has also been up to speed. Once again, I cannot thank the P1s enough.
for giving me a call on that total traffic tip line and giving me the, you know, the haps on what's going on in those freeways since our computers were down, our speed screens were down, didn't have a clue, pretty much flying blind, and you guys really came through and helped me out a lot. Thanks again. Once again, you know, put this number in your phone book, that's for sure. It's the total traffic tip line. It's 858-467-0504, and you can call me anytime to let me know what's going on in case I get it wrong or I just can't see it or just to let me know what's going on anywhere, okay? Right now, again, the 15 freeway. It's starting to open up a little bit, though, but we've got some heavy traffic still on the 15 northbound heading on to the westbound 56. That is still backed up here, pretty much solid, all the way to the 5 freeway. Once again, if you're in this area, in Rancho Panosquitos or in Carmel Creek or Camino del Sur, Trying to get to the 56, your best way out is go eastbound. That is open. You can take that to the 15 and then go south from there. That's pretty much the better way to go. Right now, your westbound 78 is also slow. Just a little bit through Oceanside, El Camino Real, up to around the 5 freeway. Heading south in the 5, you're seeing some better speeds. You won't find the backup now until you get into around La Costa. And from there, it's pretty solid still down to Carmel Valley. Northbound 5, you will find a bit of a backup here this morning because you're going to just hit some heavy traffic.
excuse me, from coming up to the 56 in Carmel Valley, up to run the racetrack on this side, and then you're pretty much good to go. But most of the part that 15, between the 78 and the 56 is shut down, and they're really urging people in Poway along a spoiler road, as it turns into Rancho Renato Road, to get the heck out of there. I got a question, Rick. Yeah. What about people that are maybe trying to get home that live in that Poway... Scripps Ranch area, is the 15 North moving north of the 8? It is. Well, actually it is. You know what? It's looking good, but the thing is, they're not going to let you pass the 15 North at the 56. They're going to put you on the westbound 56. Okay. Even if you're a resident, I'm sorry, it's just too dangerous. They're not going to let you through. But anywhere through there, up until Mira Mesa, Poway, that 15 is running north and everything? That's looking smooth for you. Yeah, looking real good here for you. Okay, cool. Let's see, what else we got here for you? Again, the East County and South Beach rides have been pretty much up to speed all morning long and problem-free. As you can imagine, CHP are just, they've got their hands full. So if you're getting a fender bender, got a little damage on your car, don't even bother calling. They're not going to come out and even take care of you. You're going to have to do that yourself. Just exchange the information and go from there. Let's see what else I need to tell you. I think that's pretty much it, Mikey.
That's good, man. Hey, dude, I appreciate it. You're working overtime today, and we really appreciate it, man. Yeah, well, again, I'm not sure where your house is or skies or whatever, but I'm praying for you guys to hope your homes are safe and okay. Thank you, man. And stuff like that. I know last, you know, the Cedar Fire came within about a block and a half of my house, and three homes burned not too far, just around the corner from me. So I'm just hoping it's not going to head that far south into Tierra Santa, because I live in, like, the northeast end of Tierra Santa. Right. And so I'm just praying, too, that it's not going to come that far. south but uh hopefully you guys and your homes are all safe okay well we are right now and hopefully you know we get a little bit of break with this wind that's what we need that's what we need for sure mikey okay all right man thanks appreciate it uh you know good idea too if you have a kid and you have a humidifier turn that thing on because it will help you know it helps to filter the air um it's a great idea uh let's see it reminds me of the time i first got a wildebeest That was some time as well. Are you seriously going to do this right now? That was when I lived at La Mirage and they were still allowing Will the Beast. They don't now. I've got to pay a deposit. Just in case the Will the Beast ruins the carpet. Seriously. It did. I will tell you that. It did. Okay.
Who's number one at the box office this weekend? Oh, let's take a little look-see right here. What do we got there? 30 Days of Night. Yes. Making 16 million. That's a great movie. Did you see it, Sean? Hell yes, I did. Well, now, is it a really, like, a good movie or a Sean good movie? I think it's a... He thinks they're good when he likes them. Do you want to know the description of the movie? He can't tell. I think he can tell the difference between a good movie and a Sean good movie. A vampire movie. He thinks he can, Eddie. He can. I can tell. Well, what is it? This was a pretty good vampire movie. Oscar award winning. No. No. It looks so scary. I'd never see it in my name. It's really scary. No, no, no. It makes you jump out of your seat and stuff? No, there wasn't a lot of that. It was just a lot of psychological stuff. It looks awesome. It's pretty good. What else? So number two was Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married? Oh, so good, man. No, okay. See, you lose all credibility when you do that. Did you see it, Sean? Yes.
You did not see that. It was excellent. You didn't see it, Sean. You're so full of it. So awesome. All right. Well, that made $12.1 million. And then in third place this weekend, the game plan making $8.1 million. What's going on, Eddie? I don't know. Is it breaking news, it says? It's happening so fast that there is not an accurate count that is available. Back up a little bit. Just a little bit. A little something. Back through the air filter. But, yeah, I noticed last night it was the same. And then, of course, worse this morning. Oh, no, there's no place that you can go that you can't smell it. Let me, one thing really quickly before we go to Chris. We will eventually here have an update from officials on all of the numbers involved in this. People call and ask, well, how many homes have been lost or how many acres have been burned? It is happening so fast that there is not an accurate count that is available to us now. I can tell you, 24,000 people have no power, and that's 55 different outages spread around the county. And the rest of it beyond there, we'll get an update from Cal Fire and the local officials soon, but this does continue to be...
Incredibly treacherous situation around the county as it impacts not only hospitals, but paths of travel and routes and streets and freeways. All right. Let's see. P1 Jim? Yeah. What's up? I was just going to let you guys know. Someone texted in and said Arrow Drive and Kearney Villa is closed off. The reason it's closed off is there's a major fire station right there. There's like 200 firemen out there with their trucks all getting refueled up. Gotcha. or you'd get back out there. So that's why that's closed over there. It's quite a scene, though. It makes you real proud of what's going on. That's cool, man. Thank you for the call. All right. Rancho Bernardo. Some areas of Rancho Bernardo do not look good. Oh, my gosh. Is that a court? Oh, my. Yeah, it's a neighborhood in Rancho Bernardo that just doesn't look good. What does it look like? One house appears to be completely toast.
It's just burned to the ground. Well, and it's weird because there's like one house standing, but then the house on either side of that house. This is burned down. Yeah, it looks gone. P1 Ryan is on the line. Ryan, are you there? Yes, I'm here, Mikey. Go ahead. Hey, I just want to let people know, those are the people that are in the Forest Ranch area. It's the west side of the 15 in the Rancho Bernardo area. A lot of the people look like they're trying to go over the one lane Black Mountain Road. thinking because of earlier reports of the 15 south closure, they should turn around and get on the 15 off of Camino del Norte. I just did it, and I'm already down in Mira Mesa in about 10 minutes. Okay, awesome. Yeah, I think it's worth mentioning that 15 is open going south from that point on, so people should use it. Yep, definitely. Thank you, man. Appreciate it. Hey, thanks, Mikey. It is strange looking at the pictures they're showing because you're looking at a court, you know, a street that has a cul-de-sac. and all of the houses in this cul-de-sac are all burnt down, except for one. There's just this one standing there. It's untouched by fire. It's pretty interesting. Wow. Let's see. David Copperfield's attorney went on On the Record with Greta Van Susteren. Cut 20. What is Mr. Copperfield's reaction to the allegation? His reaction? Never in his life has he ever been anything but a gentleman...
